New Antidepressant ALKS 5461 Trials: 2016 Expected

Posted by ihatedrugs1 on January 5, 2015, at 19:19:28

I'm thinking of joining Phase 3 of this clinical study. Here is an overview of what it is about. The blog mentions that you must live in either Arizona or Georgia to participate in the trial but I'm in Florida and the study is being conducted in my city. Thought I'd share so we don't lose hope.

I think it's action is as an opiate agonist (like bupe) but combined with a partial antagonist to supposedly prevent addiction/tolerance.

Hi, wasn't it disproven that a med that increases serotonin levels alleviates depression? I'd say do the trial, but if you get the med and not the placebo and it works, won't you go through withdrawal after you stop?

Possibly...but the primary mechanism of this drug is not aimed at serotonin but the opiate receptors....from article

The goal with the Phase III trials is to evaluate the efficacy of ALKS-5461 as a treatment strategy for individuals who dont respond to modern day antidepressants in the SSRI and SNRI classes. If this drug is approved, it could treat depression from a different angle instead of relying on the hypothesis that low serotonin levels are to blame for feeling depressed.
