Phillipa,

It looks like the report was published in November of last year. I tried doing a little searching for the study's results, but I couldn't find them. Maybe they haven't been published yet?

As an FYI, I am aware of two randomized controlled trials that have evaluated minocycline as an add-on treatment to antipsychotics in patients with schizophrenia. Both studies seemed to find a significant reduction in negative symptoms in the participants treated with minocycline alongside their antipsychotics compared with those who were given placebos alongside their antipsychotics.

Here are the links to the studies:

Well, I didn't get past the abstracts (summaries) myself, but the abstracts for both studies indicate that the participants who were given minocycline alongside their antipsychotics fared better as far as "negative" symptoms were concerned than those who were given placebos alongside their antipsychotics. So, yes, the findings of both studies were positive.

Read them so basically only for new onset schizophrenia or do you feel it could work for those who have had it longer? Thanks P

Considering that the randomized controlled trials have only demonstrated efficacy for minocycline in the add-on treatment of negative symptoms in schizophrenia for patients whose illness came on recently, it seems to me that the findings technically don't say anything about whether or not patients with longer-standing forms of schizophrenia might benefit. Even though I would guess that patients who've had schizophrenia for a long time wouldn't differ significantly in their responses to minocycline compared to patients with recent-onset schizophrenia, it is possible that those who've had it for longer might not respond as well. So in other words, I can't say with complete certainty that the findings would extend to individuals who've had schizophrenia for a long time, but I think that there is definitely some reason to think that minocycline could potentially be promising as a treatment for the treatment of schizophrenia, particularly the "negative symptoms."
