Can an antibiotic trigger depression?

Posted by former poster on September 15, 2014, at 15:05:45

Why is it every time I start to feel better something kicks my *rs* again? I picked up an intestinal bug while traveling in Asia and it was treated with Azithromycin / Zithromax. Since then have had trouble with sleep, nightmares, concentration, energy, pain, word recall since. It has been 3 months.

Happened upon this:

Have you thought about taking a probiotic?

I think there is some beneficial mood effects to certain bacteria, which can be reduced with antibiotic exposure.

Z pack assuming no heart problems, or liver problems should be okay not listed as side effect . Only ones for those in this article on heart & liver.

Intriguing comment there. I will search for data on that. I have been taking some probiotics with 8 beneficial strans for a month or more. Not sure if it has helped. Do you know what strain to look for that will benefit mood?

It is not beyond reason. You know, there are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than there are human cells. Yuck. It does happen that certain intestinal bacteria secrete hormones that change the function of the CNS. They can even determine food preferences. Probiotic bacteria can help reduce inflammation. This alone could serve as a rationale to further explore the association between bacteria and depression.

One possibility that occurs to me is that a noxious bacterium might induce a "leaky gut", and trigger inflammatory events in the brain that contribute to depression. Eating probiotics (yogurt) might shift the populations of bacterial species such that the good ones outnumber the bad ones, mitigating a leaky gut, reducing inflammation, and thus ameliorating depression.

Btw, an antiviral triggered me. I went to askapatient as you did and found the other rare birds.
