when to see results from ECT?

Posted by poser938 on June 18, 2014, at 17:42:29

I meant to ask the ECT Doc about this today. but when can i expect to see results from Electroconvulsive Therapy on my mood?
Ive had 5 treatments so far, but havent experienced any effect on my mood yet. Im scheduled to do 12 in all. 3 a week.

You will find varying opinions on this. I have seen some people assert that an improvement occurs after a single treatment.

For severe or chronic depression, I should think that the range of treatments necessary for a response is 6 - 10. Be cognisant, though, that the ultra-brief pulse protocol might take longer.

I would not draw any conclusions after 5 treatments.

I think im scheduled for 12 in all.

And i found a video on youtube with someone saying they didnt improve any until the 12th treatment
im just going to do all i can to get as much out of ECT as i can. The Ultra Brief Pulse is just making some of my memories a bit choppy, but its not bad at all. i wish i hadnt been so nervous and put off ECT for so long. ive read in the past about how some people think ECT should be a first-resort, instead of a last resort like it usually is.... and i gotta say, thats how i feel about now, as well. Especially Ultra Brief Pulse ECT. its no big deal.

This last remark reminds me of when I was younger and a new RN. There was this patient that had ECT. It was my first day on the job and the whole staff was discussing how it was like a miracle that this girl had one ECT the old type I'm sure and she snapped back to a "normal person". The staff thought she was faking it. I have no idea if one can do this. But if it's less strong now I imagine it would take more treatments to achieve this. So as you said based on that one female it should have been the first course of treatment for her. Phillipa

It would seem pretty much like a miracle to simply go go the hospital to recieve treatment for your depression, and then go home an hour latter feeling better after having done ECT.

Most of what we talk about is staying on a certain prescription for weeks. Doing ECT is very much out of the ordinary. i even highly doubt that rTMS is as effective as ECT.
it also feels good to recieve Mental Health Care, and actually have the Doc doing something besides sitting behind a desk and prescribing some pill.
