should dr's be allowed to even prescribe luvox with all its drug /drug interactions? Or would anyone question his/her intelligence?

Luvox can be a powerful agent for treating OCD, despite its many drug interactions. It has a very unique MOA. I would never question a doctor's intelligence if they prescribed me Luvox.

Just to mirror what was said, luvox can be very effective in certain patients. If there is any OCD or psychotic tendencies it can be better than other SSRIs.

How does an SSRI have MAO properties and what's this about psychosis? Phillipa

Phillipa,

MOA = mechanism of action

Perhaps you're confusing this with MAO (monoamine oxidase)? I don't think anybody's suggesting that Luvox has MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitory) properties.

It's been suggested that Luvox may be of some value in treating psychotic depression, possibly because of the medication's effects on sigma-1 receptors. I'm not aware of any placebo-controlled trials that have looked at Luvox as a treatment for psychotic depression or any other condition that involves psychosis, but some case reports have been published:

think its just an old fossil ssri..took 10 years to even make its way over from Europe...did some trial studies for ocd and approved in 1994.....don't believe it has even established itself superior as an ocd treatment......watch the caffeine...or do dr's not even know about this...one dr. even suggested its dangerous and should not even be on the market...go figure

So they took high doses from 50mg up to ? And it helped what was diagnosed in them a psychotic depression. I just find it hard to get off of. Someone suggested it also had something to do with melatonin. Phillipa

> should dr's be allowed to even prescribe luvox with all its drug /drug interactions?

Yes, but it's rarely, if ever, going to be a first-choice medication. Drug interactions are more likely to be an issue for elderly people on multiple medications for various medical conditions. Even in young people not on multiple meds, other SSRIs should be tried first, but Luvox may be appropriate on occasion.

There isn't an evidence than Luvox is more effective for OCD than other SSRIs, but individual response may vary. Luvox does tend to cause more drowsiness.

> think its just an old fossil ssri...

You could say fluoxetine (Prozac) is a fossil now, but the age of a med isn't really important. Prozac and Paxil also have rather a lot of drug interactions, and tend not to be used first anymore, but some people respond well.
