Antihistamines + depression?

Posted by Sheilac on August 19, 2013, at 16:03:01

I've been a regular user of antihistamines for years. Recently, I stopped taking oral antihistamines and have relied on nasal sprays. But when allergies get bad I have taken a Zyrtec or Claritin before bed. I've noticed that the next day I'm depressed. I'm depressed when I wake up in the morning. The nights I don't take the antihistamine I'm not depressed the next day.

I never noticed this correlation before.

Are there antihistamines that don't cause depression in someone that is prone to depression?

Right now I'm only taking Buspar and dosing up to help my depression.

Anyone know if Buspar will help depression or what target dose works for depression?

I've heard taking Buspar with melatonin at night might help with depression?

Strange you write it increases depression for you as was thinking of adding Claritin non-droozy for inflammation? Phillipa

It probably works great for inflammation.

I used to take a lot of antihistamines, both for allergies and for insomnia. I would feel somewhat more depressed while taking them. It appears that Buspar combined with sustained-release melatonin can have an antidepressant effect. The combo is being tested as an AD.

Ask for "Chlorphenamine" antihistamine. I found it at Walgreens and possibly Walmart. It has antidepressant effects. Here is a quote from Wikipedia:

>>"although not generally approved as an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication, chlorphenamine appears to have these properties as well"<<

I have tried it with some success. Best of luck.
