Is this Parnate or am I just going crazy?

Posted by vanvog on June 7, 2013, at 10:08:23

This is something I have never experienced before taking Parnate, not with any other med or being med free.

I'm not talking about "Parnate dreams" which are vivid dreams, mostly nightmares and are really scary and seriously disturbing, it's another phenomena I am experiencing.

Short hallucinations which last for less than a second but are incredibly real, I'm not sure if they are considered technically hallucinations cause they only last for a split second upon awaking, I have seen my cat multiple times, she was not in my room at the time and the door was locked but it looked very real and I'm 100% sure I was awake at the time.

Another thing is strange thoughts, like really weird and bizarre but extremely convincing ideas, it can be really anything, like thinking your cat is a dog or thinking that you just got divorced even if you never actually got married, it can be anything really and it's very annoying, this also happens upon awaking. It never something potentially real, like thinking your mother just died, rather very absurd, impossible things.

It might be due to lack of REM sleep on Parnate but maybe I started developing some kind of mild Schizophrenia and should talk to my Pdoc about this. What do you think?

That's odd. What your experiencing only happens upon waking up. It's not schizophrenia. A sleep disorder perhaps? Talk to your doctor.

Yea, its just your dreams I think. I've suffered lots of dream stuff which has put me off certain meds. And one thing that always gives me strange dreams is when I stop using cannabis, resulting in night terrors, bad dreams and such, and I think its coz cannabis either suppresses REM sleep or simply stops you remembering a dream so it feels like you didn't dream. so if u smoke then at least cut down.
Because these mini hallucinations happen upon waking theres no surprise to me that you wake with them. Sounds an odd symptom, but not a surprise. I'd only worry if they continued AFTER 30mins of waking. Then something like quetiapine might help. I've had loadsa dream problems with meds, esp trimipramine, valdoxan and strong pro-serotonin meds. And I'm also on an MAOI too, Marplan.
It also seems common amongst Parnate users to think that the initial response is the main antidepressant effects. But the main theraputic effect kicks in AFTER the common energy burst. I wouldn't worry in the short term.

It sounds like sleep paralysis, when you're sort of awake, but not really, and dream images can seem like real people, or threatening presences. It's a type of condition called a parasomnia-- from what understand, in which people can sleepwalk, or have other disturbing experiences, which result from a partial waking, while some elements of sleep persist..

Unless these images continue after you're fully awake and start to make more prolonged incursions on your consciousness, I wouldn't worry about schizophrenia. I would though talk to your pdoc about it to see if there are any treatments-- and also to of course confirm that there's nothing serious going on.

It has to be from the Parnate. Meds can do strange things. But I dont know if it is something that will go away once your body becomes more accustomed to the parnate.
For me, having those kind of experiences would freak me out enough to stop. But you can decide if you want to stick it out and see if the cost-benefit ratio is worth it.
(And if you do want to stop parnate, go slow. There may also be some anxiety in the withdrawal phase)

Depending on how much you're taking, it's best to taper from parnate-- I was taking a lot and went cold turkey-- a very bad idea.

Maybe if you're not taking much you can do that-- but I would be aware there can be long term changes in neurotransmitters from taking these meds-- and it can be disruptive to simply deprive your brain of them abruptly.
