can klonopin *cause* restlessness?

Posted by g_g_g_unit on May 9, 2013, at 23:56:13

Trying to work out what's going on here .. I've been feeling restless since Monday, when I was admitted to the hospital for a stomach infection. Prior to that, I had taken small doses of Memantine, which I know can produce restlessness on withdrawal. However, it's been 5 days since I took my last dose of Memantine -- which was only a measly 2.5mg or so, if that -- and I still feel restless and uneasy. I was placed on clonazepam while in the hospital (0.5mg b.i.d.) and have started Parnate (10mg b.i.d.) today for depression.

I was thinking it might be best to allow the clonazepam to build up and reach a steady-state (my psychiatrist said it usually takes a week or so), but is there any chance the restlessness could be linked? It's rather distressing .. for what it's worth, the last benzo I was on for a sustained period of time was Xanax, and I had a full-blown paradoxical reaction to that.

If you've had paradoxical reactions to benzos in the past, then I'd say its a real possability.

How has Valium affected you in the past?

It sedated me at first, but I never stayed on it long enough to assess how it was affecting me.

My new psychiatrist said klonopin is the only benzo he typically prescribes (though it was given to me by my GP before I saw). Should I stay on the klonopin until my blood levels are steady, or possibly ditch it now?

The only times Ive felt restless on klonopin is when Ive taken a piece of something, like remeron or benadryl for a few days and then stop. I will have this restlessness at night for a a couple of nights. And I suspect when my hormones are acting up, Im 49.

Hmm, I use the anti-histamine cyproheptadine for sleep now and then; in fact, I took some last night, but I've never really had issues with it.

I e-mailed my new psychiatrist and he basically suggested it was a placebo reaction, which was a little frustrating (I know myself pretty well at this point), but I'll try hold out until the end of the weekend.

I don't know but there was a poster a few years ago on here who could not take benzos paradoxical reactions also. Personally klonopin and I didn't get along. But the others were fine. Phillipa

Psych only uses clonazepam. Anyway, things seem to have settled down a bit .. still pretty anxious (not sure whether it's the Parnate or clonazepam), but thankfully less restless.

I'm sorry to be a pain, everyone, but I'm just thinking so erratically and being impulsive and overly catastrophising that I need some guidance.

I'm almost convinced that I get a paradoxical reaction to clonazepam. I was reading through my journals while I was on Parnate last year and I'd typically take it 30 minutes before bed, feeling quite sedated, then suddenly become more jacked up. I was playing around with the dose quite a bit though, so don't know if that was a factor. Anyway, I barely slept last night and again am feeling wired tonight.

I can't for the life of me find the post, but someone on a board speculated that clonazepam interacted with cortisol (I think) somehow and that he felt similarly wired taking it at night.

I was a little discouraged when I emailed my psychiatrist and he wrote my concerns off as fear re: the med, since I know myself pretty well at this point. I'm seeing him again in 2 weeks.

Should I a) stick to 0.5mg twice a day and just ride through any sleeplessness etc. and see how I go, or b) maybe switch to 1mg in the morning and see if that makes a difference? My problem is I keep screwing around and don't stick to anything, so it's sometimes hard to gauge what's happening.

Twice a day less side effects and better coverage of med. Just my opinion. Phillipa
