Moderate Alcohol Consumption and Next Day Mood

Posted by Prefect on May 1, 2013, at 22:07:55

I've enjoyed a drink or two a night for years. But I've been tiptoe'ing around alcohol very carefully since my panic disorder/agoraphobia relapse last year, ensuring my alcohol consumption does not overlap with situations that cause me anxiety, so that my brain does not begin to see alcohol as treatment for the condition, and also does not interfere with desensitization to anxiety causing stimulus.

When I'm at home at nights, I'm very calm and serene, which is when I usually allow myself alcohol. I may have one or two. Some nights I may have a few more, but not often, it's usually because it's the weekend and I'm staying up playing my guitar or watching TV.

And some nights I don't consume alcohol at all. And this is where my bizarre observation comes in. One thing I've noticed, which strikes me as a little strange, is the nights I drink - whiskey especially - even one or two shots, not enough to even give me a buzz, the next day I tend to be a little calmer than days when I didn't consume any alcohol at all the night before.

This may be my imagination, or just a coinsidence. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this effect. Can a drink or two of an alcoholic substance have theraputic effects on brain chemistry that last the next day after the alcohol has left your system? I'm wondering if there's been any research on this.

Although I've not had a drink in over 15 years when I did have beer at night after work I always woke the next day feeling really refreshed and relaxed. I did this nightly though. I found that.25mg had about the same effect on me. Reason I gave up drinking was given chloral hydrate at the height of anxiety & no drinking. Been off this for l0 years at least but still don't drink. But yes from what I understand both hit Gaba receptors and basically have the same effect. Phillipa

I'm mostly ok when I drink in moderation. I usually get "sick" if I drink a six-pack or more. I'll start hearing voices and get somewhat short of breath. It's very uncomfortable. So I make every effort to drink in moderation or just not at all. I don't feel better the next day.

Withdrawal symptoms, perhaps.

I've never seen any research on this, but find the same thing to be true with me. I drink 3-4 drinks a night and feel better the next day than on days I don't drink. So I drink every night. I find the same to be true for pot. LOL.

The thing is if I drink too much then it does not work.

It's true I tend to feel best days after moderate drinking. And, strangely, whiskey works best. Wine seems to not help at all if not make me feel worse the next day. But 3 good size shot whiskey drinks and the next day I feel better.

But I should re-iterate I avoid drinking in situations where I'm anxious, or this would easily turn into a dangerous slippery slope.

Helps my anxiety too, more so when I'm on the alcohol.

Alcohol makes the anxiety go away like a charm, which is why I actually don't drink when I'm anxious (I have panic disorder/agoraphobia). I only allow myself alcohol during times of day I'm already calm, so that my brain doesn't see the alcohol as a treatment for the condition, otherwise I'd be in serious trouble.

Set a limit and stick to it. Worked for me when drank. Phillipa
