Tegretol/Trileptil for depression not bipolar?

Posted by Roslynn on April 8, 2013, at 14:40:54

Hi, anyone ever take Tegretol or Tripletil for a diagnosis of depression, not bipolar, and was it effective?

Any feedback welcomed.

Hi Roslynn.

I hope that life has been tolerable for you.

I have never heard of either of these two drug being used to treat unipolar depression. However, both drugs have been shown to be effective when treating impulse and anger issues in the absence of bipolar disorder. I would defer to your doctor if he feels that these drugs would help you.

Is there any family history of mental illness? At what age did your depression begin?

I took a low dose of trileptal just 150mg no side effects. No nothing really. At the time this dose was supposed to augment an Ad. Only reason stopped was the cost. Phillipa

Hi Scott,

Yeah, they probably wouldn't help, though I've always wondered. My pdoc would not prescribe them for someone with MDD.

I have a 1st degree relative with bipolar I who takes Tegretol. Helps them somewhat.

My illness began during college.

Thanks Scott,
Roslynn

Considering your family history of bipolar disorder, it might be worth exploring the possibility that your mood illness lies along the "bipolar spectrum". Not all doctors agree with this, but I believe that depression in the absence of a manic episode can still have a bipolar diathesis (genetic and epigenetic). In these cases, it might be productive to consider your condition as being bipolar depression. Have you tried Lamictal or Abiify?

Hi Scott,

I tried Lamictal which gave me terrible cognitive problems. Abilify made me feel very uneasy, almost jumpy...

How are you doing?

I took both and never experienced an antidepressant effect. There are only a couple studies that suggest Trileptal stimulates seratonin.
