Cee,

Before I tried putting the contents of the Nardil that I was taking into enteric capsules, I had been taking 75 mg of the Australian Nardil, which is film coated. Prior to that point, I had noticed a response to the medication that lasted for about two weeks, as well as responses after I tried reducing my dose to 60 mg and after I increased the dose once again to 75 mg, but at the time that I tried putting the contents of the tablets into enteric capsules, I was noticing no response from the medication. I don't remember exactly how long it took before I started feeling better again, but I don't recall it being any more than a few days. Keep in mind that I was already at a dose that should have been therapeutic when I switched from film-coated Australian Nardil to my enteric version of the Australian Nardil. I wouldn't expect to notice a response so quickly from Nardil in enteric capsules if you weren't already taking a therapeutic dose of the medication in its film-coated version. I also noticed a reduction in the severity of some of my side effects, namely the urinary retention and excessive sweating that I had been experiencing, after I started using the enteric capsules.

Now some questions for you: If you're currently taking Nardil, what dose are you taking? And assuming that you're taking Nardil, what side effects do you seem to be experiencing?

You're welcome.

It's interesting that you too have noticed what sounds like a reduction in both urinary retention and excessive sweating since you started taking Nardil in the enteric capsules. I never noticed any chest pain while I was taking Nardil, although I of course think it's good that the chest pain you were experiencing seems to have gone away. I also think it's good that your depression seems to be about 90 percent lifted now that you're taking the medication in the enteric capsules, but I can understand wanting to get to 100 percent. Perhaps you'll get there before too long. If you'd like, you can keep us posted on any progress that you notice.

If you don't mind saying, could you share with us where you got your enteric capsules from? I bought a product called PlasminPlus for the capsules, although I'm not sure if it's available anymore.

I'm sure that I gained weight while I was taking Nardil, but I'm not sure exactly how much I gained because I don't think I ever weighed myself while I was taking the medication. It seems like your current Nardil dose of 90 mg might be a sensible dose for you. I was able to experience remission on 75 mg (despite the fact that it didn't last), but some individuals do, from what I've read, need to take more to experience remission. The 1 mg per kg of body weight statistic that SLS mentioned in another post seems to be a good rule of thumb for determining what dose of Nardil you'll respond to, and it's my understanding that there's research to back that up. I do know that I normally weigh about 175 pounds, and so I think it makes sense that someone who weighs a little bit more than me might require 90 mg of Nardil for remission whereas I only needed 75 mg. Do you know how much weight you've gained since starting Nardil?

I will say that one of the side effects that did not improve for me after I switched from taking film-coated Nardil to my enteric version of the medication was weight gain. That seemed to be a problem for me no matter what version of Nardil I took.

No, I haven't taken Nardil since I received what may have been a bad batch of the medication from my pharmacy back in June 2006. As I said in another recent thread, I didn't see the point in taking Nardil if it was going to be both completely ineffective and highly intolerable some of the time. I suppose the Gavis phenelzine might be worth trying, since there at least haven't been any reports of bad batches that I know of with that version of phenelzine, but my illness has really changed its course since I started experiencing psychotic symptoms and cognitive problems back in February 2007. I'm still keeping the Gavis phenelzine in mind as something that I might possibly try if all else fails (and if my psychiatrist agrees to prescribe it for me), but for now, I'm doing reasonably well on the vitamin D3 that I'm taking. The vitamin has been helping significantly with my energy, concentration, and hypersomnia since I started taking it about a week ago. So, although I haven't completely ruled out giving the Gavis phenelzine a try at some point, I'm somewhat hesitant to try it because I don't know how it would affect me with my psychosis and perhaps more importantly, because I'm responding to something else at the moment.
