Lexapro Seems like the best of the SSRI's

Posted by Phillipa on February 9, 2013, at 11:51:51

Since quite a few people are using lexapro I thought crazy meds had a pretty good description of the good & bad and since it connects now the site to facebook and all the others to share. I figure it can also be shared here. I also didn't know that celexa was chosen for Star D trials as it had been around longer. Seems lexapro is superior for preventing relapses and the most serotonin concentrated of SSRI's. Phillipa

Or maybe it's just the only one still on patent and thus profitable to keep pushing.

Me? Cynical? Nah.

Hey Phillipa

in most studies Zoloft and lexapro have been about equal as the best of the SSRI's, and about equal to Effexor.

Zoloft is now generic, and thus cheap, so in many countries, considering that it is equal to Lexapro in the majority of patiests, is the prefered drug.

Of course, these are just averages, and there will be individuals who find prozac, Paxil, Celexa or Luvox are infact just the right drug for them, but they are in a minority

Lexapro is now generic also but the difference in price I still buy brand. Insurance pays a good portion of it. I find it totally different from celexa. Celexa I hit a mailbox with car on it lexapro provides sleep and energy for me. Phillipa

Yes, Lexparo does seem to be significantly better than Celexa

Lexapro (escitalopram) is the S-enantomer of Celexa (citalopram), which is a mixture of the R- & S-enantomers. The S-enantomer has better SSRI activity.

From my experience, Lexapro is generally not as effective as Effexor (venlafaxine), an SSRI/SNRI antidepressant, in the treatment of major depressive disorder, in most people.

You're right. I see it has gone generic. How time flies. It looks like it's available very cheaply too.

I don't buy the "best" argument however.

I didn't know either till the pdoc said it was but in comparing the prices were about the same. Could be that mine is medicaire? So since still have multiple boxes of samples and already filled prescriptions will continue to get brand. I bet it's cheaper on conventional medical insurance?

I found a place selling a months supply for about $7.00. Cash. Hard to get much cheaper. However it's a fairly new generic. For the first six months that it was generic only one company would have been allowed to make it. It was probably much more expensive for that six months.

I believe there is a new SSRI on patent, Viibryd. Lexapro has gone generic. Don't know what's so great/different about Viibryd.
