Lexapro w/ Wellbutrin not working

Posted by ilovemaui on February 4, 2013, at 21:01:11

I have struggled with depression since I was at least 13. I am 39 now. I am taking 10 mg of Lexapro and 2 150mgs of Wellbutrin per day. I've been taking the Wellbutrin for about 4 years and the Lexapro for almost 2 years.

I can't remember any time that I was not depressed, even with medication. The Wellbutrin did keep me from feeling like I was walking around under a rain cloud all of the time but still not happy or energetic at any time. Over the past 5 months I've been in a downward spiral. Very hopeless, dreading the day, anxious, drinking more to feel some sense of peace, etc.

I also have trichotillomania which has been worse over the past month. I feel like if I don't do something I could have a nervous breakdown or something. Since I can't find a psychiatrist that can see me for at least a month I want to go to my general practitioner. But I need to have a good idea of what will work for me. I have been researching Celexa and Effexor. Has anyone with similar issues tried these? Does anybody have any suggestions for someone with possible dysthymia along with anxiety and a major depressive episode? Is there hope that I can be happy? Ever?

Adding risperidone 1mg at bedtime (satrt off at 0.5mg for the first 4 nights) can help bring rapid relief to depression such as you describe. It would certainly be worth trying.

There are many other alternatives you could try (Effexor plus Remeron springs to mind) - dont give up, keep trying new things, the answer is out there.

Don't feel hopeless but I'd definitely try to find a psychiatrist. Phillipa

hi ilove maui-

sorry you're suffering. i understand (my depression started at 14 and it's gotten worse as i've gotten older--i'm 38 now).

i've been going through a major depressive episode and recently started with a new pdoc who gave me back some hope. he told me he doesn't believe in treatment resistant depression, and whether true or not, his confidence bolstered mine.

i would look for a pdoc who "gets it," someone who is willing to work with you and explore your options. easier said than done, but that's the best place to start.

some of the posters here who are more med savvy can help you out with a better regimen, but i know there's at least one TCA that's great with OCD and can help with the trichotillomania. i believe luvox helps in this area too, though i can't say for sure. either way, it sounds like a med switch is necessary.

good luck,
b

I know wellbutrin sure ups anxiety and if have a form of OCD this is an anxiety disorder. You need a pdoc. Phillipa
