MAOI $$$$$$ how do you afford without insurance

Posted by metamorphosis on December 21, 2012, at 22:33:13

I am about to start parnate with a script from my pdoc. I am calling around for prices, and they seem to range anywhere from $240-$160 for 90ct of 10mg.
Nardil seems to be cheaper. One pharmacy quoted me $69 for 90ct of 15mg. I understand that pharmaceutical companies have not jumped on these meds because lack of profit. What pharmacies have you found to have the best prices?
I have no insurance, and with these figures; I may have to try nardil instead, just because of the expense!

Nardils better anyways if you have anxiety.

The GABA-T inhibition is what sets it apart from Parnate as parnate doesn't have it.

Parnate seems like a way better option for major depression

Nardil for both though the anti-anxiety is stronger.

Is this for the generic tranylcypromine? Perhaps they quoted you a price for the Parnate name brand.

It really is a crime that under-privileged Americans should have to bear the financial burden of supporting the operations of the pharmaceutical companies so that they can sell their products for less money everywhere else.

Thats because the US doesnt have a single payer system Scott the chemical in parnete isnt expensive to prodce, and pressing it into tablets is easy, there is no reason it should cost $200 except greed. The drug companys dont sell at a loss in Australia or New Zealand, they are price gouging in the US because people arnt in a position to negotiate

Price to consumer of 50 x 10mg brand name Parnate in Australia $34, less the pharmacists professional fee, the base price of the drug is about $21 for 50 tabs

No, I made sure to specifically ask for the generic at every pharmacy I called. Of course, most of the pharmacist had no idea what the hell parnate is. And one tried to lecture me on the dangers. I basically said, look my pdoc and I both know what we are doing. Probably more than she ( the pharmacist) ever will. I was calling for a price quote, not a lecture from a pharmacist, wannabe pdoc! So, thus far the major chains in CO.is as follows- $288 an King Soopers, $185 at Walgreens. K-Mart had no idea what I was talking about. So, that was an exercise in futility. I am mustering up the mental energy to try Safeway and Rite Aid. Nardil is, of course, way cheaper at $100.49 for 180ct, 15mg or $70.49 for 90ct, 15mg at Walgreens. The problem is, I Don't Wan't Nardil. My pdoc and I both agreed on parnate and frankly dealing with the U.S. healthcare system, the FDA, and these pharmaceutical companies is fu*****. I'm sorry but it is the truth. Wr can spend money fighting these "wars" and spending billions upon billions to occupy foreign countries but we can't even take care of our own with basic health care. Sorry, but I could go on. It is ridiculous. I cannot afford to pay this kind of money for a medication that was originally made available in what, 1961. It is not even available through prescription assistance programs, because it is not one the "new and improved" anti-psychotics. Which all of the big pharma. companies are banking on right now!!!

My insurance covers it, but when I get the scrip, it says on the envelope how much money my insurance has saved me and I was shocked to see it was something like $140. I mean, this is generic and has been around since the 1950s. I think the market is so small that drug-makers charge and arm and leg for it.
