phentermine vs adderall

Posted by b2chica on November 29, 2012, at 12:40:31

my GP is willing to put me on phentramine to counteract weight gain from zyprexa. But i have to get off the adderall first.
i'm of course hesitant because i know that plays a good role with my mood.
but now that i'm on zyprexa i may not need it.

However i'm worried that phentermine will be just like adderall and not do much regarding my weight gain.

does anyone here have any experience on it?
anyone been on phentermine vs adderall? are they about the same?

**********************
yes i started exercising, not a lot as ive just started and have gotten quite big and my knees hurt to walk too much. but i've started. i'm eating better too but even with all that i'm not loosing, in fact i had a doc appt two weeks ago to check my cholesterol was 180. just went the other day cuz of bronchitis, i'm 185. so even with better diet and exercise i've STILL managed to gain weight?? not even sure how. but my guess is from my lack of activity. as due to zyprexa my metabolism is Much slower, as is my momentum.

please any insight would be helpful.
thanks

I hate to say it but that is a lot of weight. Cholestrol is fine. Is there any you can get off the zyprexa? Phillipa

I lost 20kg in 8 weeks using phentermine sr 30mg/day a couple of years ago

If you can switch, Geodon has a far lower incidence of weight gain than does Zyprexa, it might be worth trying a swap

stick with adderall. Phentermine is a lesser quality stimulant, and it made me jittery as hell. I'd say just drop the zyprexa and try something else, or maybe add metformin.

Phentermine isnt a "lesser quality stimulant" - its an appetite suppresant that was developed to try and seperate the stimulant, euphoriant and addictive peoperties of amphetamines from their appetite suppresant effect, and it largely worked. Phentermine is as effective as amphetamines at promoting weight loss, but has much less stimulant activity, and much less ptoential for euphotia or dependence. It isnt a substitute for amphetamines, and it was never intended to be.

i appreciate all your responses.

with the holidays and crummy weather near and as bad as my episodes were recently i truly feel safer staying on zyprexa at least until spring or until march-ish.
i've been on other atypicals before with numerous bad experiences (geodon the worst, i got psychotic on it). So i'm stuck with zyprexa for now.

i just talked with my GP and he is going to rx the 30mg dose.
i'll give it a try at least. if it doesn't work i'll just go back on the adderall and figure out another plan.

thanks

I gained weight at an alarming rate on zyprexa, despite the fact that it made me feel well enough to get out and exercise more. I ate the same diet as I always eat. The weight gain was purely metabolic. I tried a thyroid supplement, but that didn't stop the weight gain, so I had to stop using it. All the AAP's but geodon had this effect on me -- 2-3 pounds per week weight gain. All the AAPs but geodon worked immediately and effectively on my depression.

phentermine only acts on NE....its less potent than adderall, it doesnt really effect much dopamine. Adderall peps people up to study, get motivated and be in a good mood. Phen. usally i a stimulant but its not going to give you that motivation mood lift. You look it up....but it Phen is effective for weight loss definetly.

Are you still on it, and what dose? What dose of zyprexa are you taking and which brand?

I just had a failed one week trial of decreasing the perphenazine further. So back on 2 pills a day (8mg x2) with realy good results this time. Also finding that the Teva zyprexa is best for me. At 10mg now. Going to stop take the 15mg zyprexa 2 times a week and just 10mg every day, hope it works this time.

First day of phentermine.
i can tell my moods a bit lower from no adderall but i expected some lowering.
i'm also kind of tired/ na sluggish this morning.
i'm having a slight headache and some chills. but im' still fighting a nasty cold so i dont know if its SE or just nature. i know headache is SE for sure.

i want to give this a good try.
i'll update in a week and see how its going.
i see pdoc last week in Dec., and i'm to schedule GP appt in three months for checkup on weight.
