Nardil from Greenstone or Gavis??????

Posted by Roslynn on September 1, 2012, at 13:42:11

Hi, I got my script filled for Nardil and got the Greenstone version. Is this generally thought to be better than the Gavis version, or vice-versa?

Does it not come in Brand form anymore?

Thank you for any help!

Roslynn,

As far as I know, Nardil still comes in a brand version. It would be my guess that your pharmacy is giving you a generic version because they usually supply generics (if available) unless your doctor specifies that a generic can't be substituted for the brand version. Here's the labeling information for Pfizer's Nardil:

http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/lookup.cfm?setid=513a41d0-37d4-4355-8a6d-a2c643bce6fa

The inactive ingredients in the Greenstone phenelzine appear to be identical to those in Pfizer's Nardil, which doesn't come as a surprise with Greenstone being a subsidiary of Pfizer. With what I just wrote being the case, the Greenstone phenelzine shouldn't be any different from the Pfizer version. I haven't read enough reports from Nardil/phenelzine users to make a determination as to whether the Greenstone version of the medication tends to be superior to the Gavis version. I've read a report or two saying that the Gavis version is more effective than the brand version, but others have said that the Gavis version is no better. Unfortunately, I've only come across a limited number of reports comparing the different versions of Nardil/phenelzine that are currently available, so it's hard for me to conclude anything. Maybe someone who's come across more reports will be able to help you more.

I always felt the Pfizer version works better for me than Gavis. I dont like the way Gavis pills look lol

So Greenstone is the same Pill as Pfizer?
That would make sense, i didnt notice a difference from Pfizer to Greenstone.

Also i find the Pfizer version a tad more effective than UKs Archimedes brand.

Now this could be all in my head, but i just dont like Gavis. They look "second-hand" and dont have the distinct Nardil smell. My brain associates the look of Gavis pills with not so good times.

The two versions appear to be the same. The inactive ingredients in the Greenstone phenelzine look like they're the same as those in Pfizer's Nardil, and Greenstone is actually a subsidiary of Pfizer. I'm not sure if the Greenstone phenelzine and the Pfizer Nardil are actually made at the same facility, but it would surprise me if there were any meaningful difference between the two Nardil/phenelzine versions.

Cool, that means bucks can be saved? Idk what the price difference: Pfizer Greenstone is?

Does ordering Nardil from Canada make sense financially?

Thx

Lamdage,

I would imagine that the Greenstone phenelzine is less expensive than the Pfizer Nardil, but unfortunately, I don't know exactly what the price difference between the two would be. And because I don't know how much the Greenstone phenelzine costs (and the same goes for the Gavis phenelzine), I don't know if it would make sense from a financial standpoint to order Nardil from Canada. If the generic versions of Nardil that are available in the U.S. are inexpensive enough, then of course I think it would make the most sense to just get your prescription filled in the U.S.

I'm sorry that I couldn't be of more help. Maybe somebody else here with more knowledge of how much the various version of Nardil/phenelzine cost will be able to help you out.

Strange. I just got some Greenstone and there is virtually no smell at all. Whereas my previous two months of Gavis smell very strong

I have taken the Pfizer brand name Nardil for the past several years. A month go I switched to the Gavis/Lupin version because the brand name is on back order. I have noticed an increase in side effects, despite being on the same dose. I put on five pounds of abdominal fat (yuck) despite the exercise and reduced added sugar in my diet. I have a lower sex drive, and feel more drowsy. This suggests to me that the Gavis phenelzine might be more effective, or perhaps more efficiently absorbed, than the Pfizer version. I am reducing the dose slowly to 45 mg to see if that helps reduce the side effects.
