Have take tons of stuff for years. Nothing works. Would love to have some good feedback. Sorry for the topic but I know most of you deal with it with these meds.

Take a fibre supplement once or twice a day (Metamucil, Citrucel, Fibercon), and take a dose of senna or bisacodyl when you feel the need

I tried in this order:
1. High fibre diet and increased water consumption
2. Metamucil (fibre supplement)
3. Traditional laxative (i.e. Ducolax)

All of which had no effect. In fact, I'd say that no. 1 made the situation worse because all this bulky food could not get out, so my belly just got bigger and bigger and all the more painful. Your mileage may vary.

Went to doctor.
4. CT scan to check for any blockages (none, but scan showed severe constipation).
5. Prescribed Movicol, a stool softener. Had to use 4/day at first, kick-started with suppositories. Now everything is moving again I only need to take 1-2 a day.

Good thing that worked, because had it not the next step was an enema. :S

Warning: Movicol is absolutely disgusting to drink by itself. It is bearable however if you make up the solution as prescribed and then add half a cup of juice.

There was talk of reducing the dose of the med predominantly responsible for the constipation, thankfully that hasn't been necessary.

Hopefully there is something on this list that you haven't tried.

Magnesium supplements nightly 300mg works great for me. With or without meds would need this. Phillipa

Have you tried a fairly large dose of a magnesium supplement in the evening? I know it sounds odd, but I had horrible constipation on lithium and magnesium totally did the trick. Other than that only stimulant laxatives did anything, and thats no way to live.

>I've had IBS for 20 years and I my doc. put me on Amitiza 24 MCG 2 x day and Librax 4 x day. It's the only thing that has ever worked for me.
