What to expect and when from Abilify add-on

Posted by Laney on May 1, 2012, at 9:52:24

I just started 2.5 last night as an add-on to 10mg. paxil for depression.

I put this off for a long time due to the price.

Any comments?

Thanks!

Laney

I didn't know you were considering it. No nortriptalline? I just thought you were doing really well now. Good luck in all sincerity. Phillipa

I've had good luck with it added to Lamictal, and it kicked in after only 4-5 days.

I started, years ago, at 7.5mgs (this was back when ALL the sample packs were 15, it was mostly for psychotic disorders, and EVERYONE was supposed to take 15mgs).

Anyway, as I recall...it helped, quickly at that. I had agitation and psychotic depression. I would think--but obviously, I don't know for sure--that your dose should help quickly. Low doses are stimulating for many people, and there should be some mild anti-agitation/calming effect. I mean, even though low doses are stimulating and fairly benign, it is still a tranquilizer, so I think part of the reason it helps depression is that it calms agitation, anxiety, while also stimulating a bit.

I pray this works for you. I read an animal study online a long time ago that showed that Abilify makes SSRI class antidepressants work better. Actually, if I recall correctly, the only antidepressant Abilify didn't boost was Wellbutrin. Again, I really hope this works for you.

Thanks everyone. So far just adding more tiredness to my tiredness from allergies. I'm really hoping something gives.

It helped me dramatically. I have unipolar, non-psychotic depression and had an inadequate response to many, many antidepressants. I hope you have a strong, positive response like I did.

Best,
EE

Hi Emily... May I ask what dose abilify you take, and if you take any other meds with it?

I just started it for the same diagnosis as you at 2.5mg, and it is causing me some problems... anxiety, insomnia.

Thanks, take care ...

I was on different doses at different times with different combos of meds. Most recently, I was on 5 mg along with 20 mg lexapro. I was never lower than 5 mg. Some people have said that they have noticed more side effects at low doses, but I don't know if that is true.

Lots of luck!

We are all so different. 2.5mg. has just made me feel tired. No anxiety. No insomnia. Unbroken, sweet sleep. LOL!

I will try raising it to 5mg. and see what happens. But not until after the weekend as I'm going to be away with some friends.

I'll let you know and thanks for posting!

So, abilify has more side-effects at lower doses? I'm having some anxiety and agitation at 2.5mg. So would these issues get better by increasing to 5 mg?

Would they go away eventually after my body acclimates to the med?

What time of day do most people take this?

Thanks ... Alexei

I just finished a three week trial of it, and though it did not work for me, its effects showed up in the first few days. My doctor says that for people it works for, it is effective right away. The main thing it did to me was sedate me the first few days, then give me a bit of insomnia for the rest of the time (I'd fall asleep with my regular dose of 2 mg Xanax but couldn't sleep more than four or five hours, waking as soon as it wore off).
