Parnate (MAOIs) and vitamins/supplements?

Posted by violetdream on March 26, 2012, at 15:47:57

Hi, for a few months I have been taking a lot of vitamins and supplements to try to help with the depression. It's very very hard to get information on every single thing that's in these vitamins and I'm worried I'll have a bad reaction with the Parnate I just started. I was on the Emsam patch at 12mg and never had a reaction to any of these vitamins, but I worry that with Parnate it may be different? In particular all of my vitamins are vegan and I worry that some things may be yeast sourced.

Are there any obvious things to stay away from? Actually none of the things I take have herbal things in them, and none of them have 5-HTP or any of the "calming" things which would certainly cause an effect.

Do any of these things stand out badly?
Iron supplement with Vitamin C for absorption
Vitamin D
Probiotic
Choline / Inositol
Lecithin (also has a small amount of Kelp/Vinegar)
Omega 3/6/9 Oils
CoQ-10
Calcium / Magnesium / Zinc
Citrus Bioflavonoid (mostly just trying this for ear ringing)
"Daily Journey" Multivitamin by MikroLing (this is what I'm probably the most worried about, it seems standard enough but has very small amounts of some odd things I haven't really heard of like Vanadium, Lutein, Zeaxanthin? Are just "standard" multivitamins OK, b-complex, etc etc?)

If none of this stands out terribly what would the best way be to approach this cautiously? Building up to taking the vitamins slowly? Have any of you had problems with mostly just vitamins/chemicals on any MAOIs? As I said there's basically no suspect herbal stuff or "calming" things that could interfere with MAOIs...

Here's the best source I've found on MAOI dietary issues:

Thanks, I have known about this site for quite a while, but I can't find info on vitamins and supplements. The full PDF he publishes is just foods.

Hi, I take Vitamin D, B-complex, a multi, and magnesium whenever I remember, and I haven't had any reaction to the Parnate. I'm actually considering adding Chromium Piccolate, it's supposed to be good both for depression and carb cravings, and I read somewhere (wish I remembered where!) that it plays well with Parnate. I would say mostly not to worry, as long as it's not SAM-E or St. John's Wort.

Does anyone have any further feedback about taking multi vitamins with parnate.

When I was in hospital on phenelzine, I was told not to take vitamin B. I cant remember the reason.
