PTSD, GAD, and Despression

Posted by FreeToLive on March 25, 2012, at 10:03:31

For the past ten years, I have been on Lexapro 10 mg, Topamax 50 mg (two 25mg tablets a day), Ambien as needed and Xanax as needed. It has been a life saver for me. I work and live a pretty normal life. Yes, I am tired, but was off work for 3 months and thought it was going to be long term. After 5 years, my Lexapro was upped to 20 mg, in which I did experience some weight gain of about 20 pounds, but to be honest, I haven't tried to loose it. I need to work on that. I do cut the Lexapro in half and take 1/2 in the early morning and the other mid day as I use my mind for my job and need to think clearly. I hope this helps someone. It does help with all of my symptoms. I have had a ton of counseling to for my panic attacks I used to have and although PTSD doesn't have a total cure, it does subside the symptoms, the anxiety is decreased and I can't say I really have depression. I am generally level on my moods. I do get stressed, but well I believe working and living in combination does that so pills aren't going to make everything perfect, but give us a way to be functional. Only my opinion, as I have had the blessing of psychiatrist(s), psychologist(s), and family doctor(s) to work with over the past ten years. I have put the (s) in there since I moved 6 years ago and had to change doctor's who maintained the re gamine. I hope this helps someone out there as these sites helped me when I become sick and was so worried... Good luck and God Bless on your journey. A positive belief that you will see the other side of this will take you a long way, hang in there.

Many psychiatrist's are prescribing Prazosin for many of the symptoms of PTSD. Ask your doc about it.

I agree with Phiddipus. There is a wealth of data indication that prazosin is useful when treating PTSD, especially sleep disturbances and nightmares, although daytime anxiety is often mitigated as well.

You may want to keep the Topamax. It, too, has a good track record for treating PTSD. Unfortunately, I don't know the dosage range of Topamax when used this way. I like the 100 mg/day dosage for bipolar mixed-states.

My dosage is 50 mg (two 25 mg tablets) since you can't cut them in half. This way when I get off work or during the weekends if my mind starts to be too busy with thoughts of just anything (racing-rewinding of the days events like a movie) I take one and it works in combination with the xanax which is a low dose of .25 i think. I take it twice a day as needed. There are times I go up to 4 times a day, and then taper back down again. I do good and then have my troubled times.

If I'm having a good day, I just take two (25 mg) at bedtime of the Topamax totaling 50 mg.
