APs like Zyprexa without weight issues??

Posted by brokenbrain on March 2, 2012, at 19:50:31

Anyone know if there are any old school APs that are somewhat similar to Zyprexa that may not cause as much weight gain? I've been through all of the new atypicals and Zyprexa is the only one that really works for me and I am somewhat functional on a day to day basis. But it really cranks up the hunger and causes an issue for me there. I've tried everything that is new that is out there and can't tolerate it or it just doesn't work.
My symptoms are in the Aspie arena with depression and severe anxiety.

I really don't know what symptoms you need to address, but an old antipsychotic that might be worth a look at is perphenazine (Trilafon). Some people do gain weight on it, but I doubt it is to the same degree as Zyprexa. I once read that trifluoperazine (Stelazine) was weight-neutral, but I don't know anyone who takes it.

Molindone (Moban) would have been a good choice to avoid weight gain, but it is no longer available in the US.

perphenazine! I take that and zyprexa. Those two seem most simmilar than any of the other AAPs I took. I've taken most of the atypicals.

You can add stuff to the zyprexa, if you're into that. Metformin is one option. I read somewhere online that high-dose alpha lipoic acid and green tea extract taken with zyprexa mitigated weight gain and helped with the other metabolic effects.

Wouldn't lurasidone (Latuda) make sense here? Or have you already tried that one?

Yep, already tried Latuda. Didn't seem to work as well. I've also tried Metformin with the Zyprexa which didn't do much on the weight either. Right now the doc has me down to about 5mg Zyprexa (was up to 20 at one point) and has added Desipramine. The combo is "ok" for now, but if I need more umph I don't want to go up on the Zyprexa again and I can't tolerate a higher dose on the Desi (side effects too bad). I appreciate all the input and I might ask about those APs you mentioned. It does help to have some ideas from folks that have similar issues.
My main symptoms are anxiety, depression, seclusiveness, anger and paranoia issues. Zyprexa is a miracle drug. I just wish they could refine it to get rid of the bad effects.

Zydis?

Anyone with experience with Zyprexa Zydis and weight? I've been combing the medical journals and see that there are mixed results on proving that.

I've tried the Zantac theory...(Zyprexa and Zantac) but no luck with the weight or hunger there. Tried it for quite a few months.

5 mg of Abilify, in addition to my Zyprexa, had the nice side effect of cancelling out the weight gain from the Olanzapine for me.

interesting you mention zydis. i noticed that when i took this i had little to no weight gain.
might have been that i was never able to be on it long (usually just given samples) too expensive for me at the time.

by all means give it a try and see how effects you.
let us know.

Yeah, tried Seroquel. It's only good for sleep for me. Can't handle high doses as I tend to get agitated. For some reason Zyprexa has some combo of transmitters it's hitting just the right way.
But thanks for all the ideas everyone. I do appreciate it.

I got massive cravings for sugar on Zyprexa and gained 10 lbs or so. And I have a pretty fast metabolism. Docs switched me to Risperdal, and I lost the added weight. They commonly switch patients off meds like Zyprexa and place them onto Risperdal in elite psychopharmacology circles-- Seroquel is a -pine drug (drug ending in pine, as is seroquel).

-pine drugs are notorious for adding weight and also having a higher risk for type II diabeties for metabolic reasons a very smart person told me but was over my head as it was explained. He explained that it increases the risk of type II diabeties even in patients like me that had minor weight gain.

On the other hand, -pine drugs also have an anti-anxiety effect, although it wasn't exactly like klonopin or something for me... it's certainly not worthgetting diabeties over.

I'm on Invega Sustenna injection, Risperdal's sister. Invega is offered as an oral or a monthly injection. It's nice not to have to remember to take it everyday, especially given the coma-like state that ensues for 3 days if I forget to take an atypical within the same hour of the day each day.

Amisulpride, flupentixol (nm)
