What should I add to treat depression?

Posted by phidippus on February 23, 2012, at 17:29:34

Here's what I'm on:

Lithium 1200 mg
Latuda 80 mg
Viibryd 60 mg
Vyvanse 60 mg

I feel sad a lot of the time and seem to entertain too many negative thoughts.

What condition or symptoms are you attempting to treat?

Would Wellbutrin make your condition worse?

Could you cut your lithium dose? Reduce the neuroleptic?

Why not?

How negative?

I won't even mention Dilaudid.

Logic makes me ask a question, that if one feels as crappy as you do on your meds, why would anyone want to stay with those meds? Just because? Some book says so? It's supposedly the right thing to do? I mean, come on, if they aren't working they aren't working and that's all there is to it. So rather than suggest what you could add to the mix, I would ask, what can be removed and/or replaced? Another add-on at this point is not an option. In situations like yours, hundreds of them over the years, the outcome of adding on more meds to a fairly non-performing cocktail is almost always an undesirable one....worse shape than ever, and now faced with multiple withdrawals to get unstuck from the whole mess, and usually years of lost life opportunities and lost healing opportunities.

Most people I know of, if they were on your cocktail, I am guessing would probably say they feel sad much of the time and probably dull with lots of negative thoughts and unfounded fears. I just don't see that combo as being much of a mood brightener in any way. If it is being used as a mood stabilization strategy, the doses are too high. imo But more likely, wrong choice of meds for you.

Much agree with the above. I had a dysfunctional cocktail of clomipramine+mirtazapine, I ditched it (now take a very low dose diazepam 2,5 mg and 25 mg Seroquel) and to be honest I feel the same without the side-effects.
Also I can't get tired of reminding people that amphetamines can cause depression (in the long term) in vulnerable individuals. I was bordering suicidal on Ritalin (not an amphetamine but bascially the same). Worse experiment in my life ever. Besides there was even a study showing that rats after long-term methylphenidate start displaying depressive like behaviour.

I am currently on a complex med cocktail for Bipolar, but I still struggle with constant low grade depression. I recently started to supplement with Vitamin D and, contrary to my low expectations, I am getting great results. Sounds rather simple, but supplementing with vitamin D can produce profound results in some people. Best of Luck!
