Nardil/Parnate-friendly PDoc in Scranton PA area?

Posted by AnsonPA on February 22, 2012, at 1:33:58

After months of no effect with Celexa/Zoloft/ Wellbutrin/Remeron for severe social anxiety, my doc had the bright idea to suggest Paxil... He flat out said he'd never consider Nardil or Parnate.

Can anyone recommend a doc in the Scranton/Wilkes Barre, or preferably Hazleton area that's comfortable with Nardil or Parnate? Someone that won't treat me as if I was asking for an benzo or opiate and be willing to prescribe in the first visit. I'm aware of the risks and am perfectly willing to change my diet and constantly monitor my BP.

If not, I may just have to travel to NYC to see Dr. Ivan Goldberg.

I saw someone in Ithaca who rxd both meds. It is a long drive, but if you are interested, I could find out if he is still practicing. I would be happy to email you if he is and if you can stand to make the trip.

That's actually not a bad idea.

What is it about Dr. Goldberg that you find appealing?

This is probably confusing.

I meant that refusing to prescribe MAOIs is a bad idea.

Is there any reason why you would choose to take Parnate instead of Nardil?

From the various posts on this forum it seems he's well experienced with MAOIs. I fear that if I just any random pdoc, he'd be another MAOI-phobe and insist on SSRIs.

I've always had poor motivtation/lazyness/low energy and I feel like Parnate would definitely help me restart my education, which I abandoned at age 16 because I just couldn't stand the anxiety (Almost a third of my life wasted hiding at home with no friends... ~8 years ago, as I'm now 23.)

If Parnate does not produce the improvements you are looking for, I would recommend that you try Nardil afterwards. Nardil can give you the things you are looking for, including more energy. In addition, Nardil is well-known to reduce anxiety and promote socialization. There are plenty of people whom respond to one MAOI whom have failed to respond to another.

Perhaps you can ask Dr. Goldberg for a referral in your area rather than going to NYC to see him.

Did you consider paxil with a benzo? That worked well for me at l0mg with xanax for a few years. I chose to go off it as was feeling great. Just continued on the low dose xanax. Phillipa

My doc prescribes all 3 MAO's, what's the big deal? Both Nardil and Marplan have worked well, only Parnate didn't for me.

You just have to be extremely careful and it's obvious that many docs do not trust their patients to follow the diet and drug interactions. That's too bad for you.

I would have no trouble getting them but I look for doctors who are independently minded.

I'm not sure you can judge this in advance. Some things to look for .......older, no product samples.....and just a very independent outlook.

Are there any university affiliated psychiatrists around there? They might be more open to prescribing maoi. Perhaps for individual doctors the fear is liability. Just my guess.
