Xanax is among the most difficult benzos to discontinue. It would not be recommended as an aid to coming off Ativan, or any other benzo. Whether the Xanax is a brand or generic has little to do with it.

OK, in that case it would make sense to take generic lorazepam.

I think if you start w/generic,and stick w/same generic,it will be fine. It's when you get used to brand then try to switch to generic when you feel strange.I take brand Klonopin, but if I could start again,i'd take generic. Its so expensive.I did start out w/generic,it worked fine. But i wanted to try the brand, and stuck w/it.No insurance either.

thats good to know.I just dont understand why brand has to be so expensive.I was stupid to switch when the generic was fine.I tried to go back to generic and it didnt work for me,so I understand.but I look at it this way: I dont spend alot of money on myself,so this one thing is ok!I only take it at night and a small dose.So that helps some with the cost. I tried ssris but had weight gain and rls got worse.

Please let me know if switching benzos causes them to work as been on them over 40 years been about 7 since they didn't provide relaxation and just tiredness. I'm older than you are. Phillipa

Yeah, I see the prices they pay in the US and think, WTF? Swings and roundabouts, though. Our cost of living, housing, education is much higher.

>I just don't understand why brand has to be so expensive.

The branded drug doesn't cost anymore to manufacture than the generic, it's just that the profit margins for the manufacturer are much higher for the brand. The manufacturer charges so much for the brand in the US because they know that some people will want the brand, and therefore pay.

Xanax is rarely used in the UK, but it is not particularly expensive here. Still, it is a lot more expensive than the benzos which are widely used eg. diazepam and temazepam. Pfizer's wholesale prices for branded Xanax in the UK are currently as follows:

Xanax 0.25mg (pack of 60), £3.18 (+ VAT)
Xanax 0.5mg (pack of 60), £6.09 (+ VAT)
