900mg Lith???

Posted by Sheilac on January 31, 2012, at 12:14:28

I had to consult with my regular MD on the heart issues I was having with the Grodon/Adderall mix. Now that I am off both meds I have fallen into a depression.

She suggested a "baby" dose of Lithium - 300mg 3 times a day. 900mg of lithium sounds like a lot to me. She wants me to try it for a week. She said that is considered a baby dose. She feels like my mood is bouncing around too much and is too low.

Is 900mg of lithium a lot? Will it help with depression? Will it make me fat or give me other side effects?

Yikes!

No. However, it is considered to be a full dose for some people who have bipolar disorder. It depends upon blood levels. 300 mg is a low dose, and can be quite effective to treat unipolar depression when it is combined with an antidepressant.

Have you ever tried Wellbutrin?

My full dose when I was on it was 900 mg. As Scott said, you should have a blood test. I think the level is supposed to be between .7-1, but others may correct me on this.

You might have side effects. I had pretty significant side effects on that level but everyone is different. I was prescribed it to deal with severe depressive episodes.

From what I understand, the risk of lithium producing kidney damage is proportional to dosage and blood levels. This would argue in favor of using low dosages to treat unipolar depression. The Harvard research team determined that 300-600 mg was effective when lithium was added to an antidepressant to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). 450 mg was used most often. I am gleaning benefit from 300 mg. It decreases the variability in my depression during the course of a single day as well as day-to-day during the week.
