Saphris 10mg or 5mg

Posted by Beckett on January 8, 2012, at 23:28:15

I feel better right now at 10mg Saphris than the past 30 days at 5mg. Originally my doc spoke of briefly going to 10mg to see if a bit of the hypos would blow over.

I think they have. I feel calmer and better. I am calling tomorrow to discuss staying at 10mg until our next visit at the month's end.

Why would I feel better on an AAP? I expected sedation. I don't know what I expected, but what I feel is what I expected
from the umpteen AD's that instead irritated the blazes out of me.

What is possibly going on?

Any reason to drop back to a lower dose besides diabetes? Could it stop working? What am I overlooking?

Didn't want to say it before tardive dyskenisia. Good luck and you never know what the doc will say. Phillipa

I'm sure you know that some people go up to 20 mg (10 b.i.d.) with Saphris. I would encourage you to take the same dosage everyday and not use it as a PRN.

Thanks for the replies. If my doc gives any solid answers tonight, I'll let you know. In the interest of science of course.

Pro Re Nata

It means to use as needed. Taking ibuprofen only when you have pain would be a PRN treatment.

Well, yes and no. I received notice of a fill for the 10mg strength. No info though. Guess I'll need to wait for that.

I think you do what you have to do. I'm back up to 30mgs Abilify daily. Yes, 30mgs--3x the 10mgs minimum dose for antipsychotic action and 2x the target dose of 15mgs. I function better and I take loads of antioxidants to reduce the risk of the various tardive syndromes.

I tried 15 Abilify, but found myself needing higher doses periodically to keep my cool (my thoughts would get fuzzy, I'd get agitated, mild psychosis--I'm officially Bipolar I, but I have a lot of schizophrenic symptoms).

Anyway, 30 works for me, and maybe 10 Saphris will be the ticket for you. Sometimes its better to just take a higher dose of a very effective medication and do what you can to watch out for and prevent side effects than it is to take a cocktail and/or suffer. So, I say: 10 for the time being.

Why have you not been diagnosed as having schizoaffective disorder / bipolar type?

I don't know. My current doctor was trained in Europe, and I think they diagnose bipolar and schizophrenia differently.

http://www.mentalhealth.com/ used to publish the American and European diagnostic descriptions. I can't find them now. However, they were quite different. The European description seemed more holistic to me. The American DSM description seems very primitive by comparison.

I'm glad you are feeling better. I wouldn't be too frightened of Abilify at 30 mg, though. Tardive dyskinesia is uncommon and theoretically less likely to occur than with other APs. I have not seen any cases of tardive akathisia. I would recommend that you do your own research so that you can better characterize the risks associated with Abilify. I recommend using Medine / Pubmed.
