History + symptoms = hopeless prognosis

Posted by alchemy on December 11, 2011, at 16:20:42

Unless science comes up with something new, everything points to a poor prognosis.
- depression that starts early
- the longer depression lasts(almost 30 yrs)
- poor response to medication (most make me worse)
- rapid cycling (the hardest to treat)
- hormone influence (no, birth control is worse)
- other thing that I don't remember
- my own conclusion that I can't find anything on the web where thyroid meds actually increase depression - what is wrong with me?

What meds are there that aren't typically used for depression that could possibly help?

(I've also had tms)

NMDA antagonists like Riluzole, Memantine, Campral and Zonegran have all had studies pointing to their efficacy as antidepressants. One in particular, Ketamine is said to lift depression in a matter of hours.

Then their are options like deep brain stimulation and vagal nerve stimulation.

Throid meds if have thyroid problems should help depression. I don't think the meds cause it Phillipa

Have you ever considered trying a course of ECT?

ECT actually has helped a couple of times when meds really messed me up. By 6 treatments I was out of the black hole. The last time I tried ECT it almost seemed to make me worse. My guess is it was because they had me lower my dose of Lamictal so fast. They said people didn't have a problem just stopping Lamictal (because it's anti-seizure). I was trying it again because I wanted to try maintenance. Thanks though.

Thanks Phillipa. The T3 (Armour brand) did make my mood worse. (also when I increased it). That's one of the things that's frustrating, that isn't suppose to happen.

Thank you Eric. That was what I was hoping to find out. A couple of those sound kind of familiar from searching. I doubt my dr. will prescribe them, but it's comforting to know that those NMDA drugs are there.

Some can't take T3. Armour batches can also vary but I hear it's superior to synthroid as I take. You know I kind of find the same thing the optimal range isn't any better. Docs are supposed to treat the way the patient feels and not go by numbers. Phillipa

Nimodipine + Verapamil?

I have also written down Nimodipine & Verapamil as last resort options. Although I don't have high blood pressure. Thoughts or experiences?
