Word finding problems on lamictal??

Posted by sleepygirl2 on November 5, 2011, at 11:47:48

I think I associate this with lamictal.
What is the weirdest thing is that I'll often find a word close to the one I want to say, maybe in the same category, or close in sound to the one I'd like....
Case in point, I go to the post office and say, "I'd like to play with a debit card."
This happens a bit.
Anyone else?

Happens to me ALL the time. I've been on Lamictal forever, so perhaps... Yet I think I've always done it. I remember thinking I'd make a very bad teacher because of it.

It gets worse when I'm tired.

My family knows me well enough to listen to what I intended to say, on some happy occasions without bringing it to my attention. It can make discussions with others challenging.

Similar sounding words are the worst. But sometimes words that start with the same letters, or as you say, are in the same general category.

Often with writing. I'll substitute know for no etc. I'm not on lamictal. But other substances. I haven't found benzos to be a tonic. Or maybe it's something else.

Yeah, speech, too.

Umm comes in very handy.

Guess my dose wasn't high enough or long enough on the lamictal for it to happen? Phillipa

Is the word-finding problem something that started after you started Lamictal.. or did it exist before the Lamictal and just get worse?

I just don't remember noticing it before the lamictal. Was curious if others attribute it to lamictal.

I had some word finding problems. I also had general memory problems which I noticed more. I definitely attributed it to the lamictal.

Yes I believe it is some sort of brain damage.
It may or may not get better after you stop taking it.

Try and remember a list of 7 things.
Try and recall that list tomorrow then the next day.

Just a little experiement.

Brain damage? From the medication? Why?

I have a similar problem, maybe not as serious. I am a professor, and sometimes when I teach it takes me a couple of seconds to say what I want. It is definitely med related. I am on lithium and Lamictal; I had attributed it to the lithium, but that's just because people talk about cognitive fog as a side effect. It could just as easily be the Lamictal.

Lamictal can make people stupid at higher dosages. I suffer brain-fog at dosages higher than 200 mg.

People can do that? I suppose I used to memorize things for school, but I'm not sure about a list. I can't remember a short grocery list for the time it takes to go around the store.

I think I could. Not on lamictal but other meds. Will remember 7 items to buy or do. Phillipa

My personal experience. Have not recovered alot of my mental functioning after having taken lactimal.
I have been off it for over 7 months and although it has improved I am still having these problems.

I notice this because I work in a high functioning job which requires alot of mental processing.

I believe it has also has given me, Enzema, Hives, and allergy to just about anything touching my skin. Including sunlight.

Lamictal has a relatively good reputation on cognitive side-effects, at least in comparison to other drugs in its class, which are some of the worst. However, in my experience, it was pretty bad.

I never took more than 50mg/day, but it gave me all kinds of brain-fog and cognitive deficits, including, if I remember right, word-finding problems, though I have these to some extent without anything to exacerbate them. It's possible Lamictal was bad on cognitive S/E for me because, well, my mind doesn't function all that well in the first place, and any further disturbance makes the entire system go to sh*t.

Anyway, going off Lamictal sucked (temporarily lowered mood--part of the discontinuation syndrome), but my cognitive problems resolved a few weeks after getting rid of it.

I don't take Lamictal nor any mood stabilizer and have problems recalling words which I never did before (more like 15 years ago) and I'm a teacher...luckily I teach Spanish so if I make a mistake no one notices. In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is King.

I think it's hard to say whether this is due to the disease itself, or all the meds we've taken. If it is any consolation read the link below:
