giving viibryd a shot

Posted by markwell on October 6, 2011, at 18:47:59

I asked my pdoc if I could try viibryd and he agreed. Anyone who has tried viibryd, has it helped with anxiety as anxiety is huge for me. I would appreciate any input as I am so nervous about trying this but nothing else has worked for me so i'm willing to give it a try.

Last night I googled it and got patient reviews and most gave it a l0. Only a couple didn't do well on it. Sounds like a winner. Thinking same myself. Only thing $200 for a month from what I read. Better medicaire doesn't cover it. I wonder if samples still given? Phillipa

Is it an SSRI? Is it new?

What sites have you looked into to get others opinions?

Thanks!

Good luck, Markwell. I don't know about the anxiety question. It's a good one. I'm curious.

Viibryd, like some other SRI drugs, might produce some mild to moderate anxiety during the second week of treatment. Usually, this disappears by the end of the third week. Be prepared for this so that you don't give up on Viibryd prematurely.

Good luck.

First day of viibryd. My pdoc told me to take 2 days on an empty stomach and then on a full stomach. I don't seem to have any side effects so far although my stomach was a little off. I'm taking 10mgs and then 20mgs after 7 days. I'm a little nervous as the last time I tried an ssri I went manic. Now I'm on a mood stabilizer so I hope it keeps the lid on.
Is 20 mgs the therapeutic dose? I'm a bit nervous but I need something for this depression and anxiety.

Markwell, good luck! I almost posted you the wiki links on viibryd and the receptor it targets. Looks like it could help with anxiety.

I hope so and that this works for you.

When I started Prozac YEARS ago they gave me Klonopin or ativan to combat the week-two agitation and it helped get over the hump. Perhaps you could consider the same??

I'd be very interested in knowing how Viibryd works for you!

Day two I had weird dreams and woke up cranky. The wake up cranky part is typical of me lately but more so this morning. I'm going to keep going with it and see where it takes me.

Day 4, a lot more anxiety and increased depression. I don't know if this is start up anxiety or what?
I don't know if I should keep going with this or not?

My opinion is to keep going. Day four is still within a start up window, at least for me, with medication. This all depends on your own judgement of symptom severity and your doc's opinion, too.

I tend to want to bail on meds during the start up. There are a few I am glad that I was encouraged to preserve through initial start up and even a few weeks in.

A whole lot of bad stuff can happen the first four days on an antidepressant that eventually may end up working great for someone. We need to have more tolerance for things here in order to increase chances of finding successful treatments.

I'm sure there is a good explanation for feeling this way at the beginning of Viibryd treatment. It probably doesn't differ much from what happens to many people in the beginning of SSRI treatment.

Maybe you needed to start at a lower dose than the standard starting dose, who knows. Stick it out for a few weeks and try to hang in there.

Good luck!

I'm going to hang in there with it. This is 1/4 of therapeutic so I don't want to start any lower. I'm supposed to raise the dose on Saturday which frightens me a little.

Day 6 of viibryd. The last couple days I've waking up around 2 am with a racing mind. This is one side affect that I can't tolerate. I'm bipolar 1 and I can't tolerate an activating ssri. I'm taking this with tegretol. The dosage is supposed to go to 20mgs on Saturday. Any insights?

Markwell, does your doctor know?

Maybe the titration needs to be slowed down. That might help, but I really don't know.

Do you have things you do or take in these situations (like klonipin)?

Keep us updated. Hopefully this will be transient and not indicative of real mania. I am pulling for you. I would say do what is best to stay stable, but that's my peer-opinion.

Not good could this throw you into a full blown mania? Definitely call your doc let him/her know. I seriously wouldn't increas the dose rather would lower or maybe it's just not the right med for you? Phillipa

Hmm, I'm not familiar with tegretol, I'm guessing it's a fairly effective mood stabilizer. I guess it's not strong enough at the moment to protect you from the stimulating effects of Viibryd.

Have you ever tried Depakote? I take Depakote with SSRIs. I also supplement l methylfolate and l carnitine to prevent some of the side effects and damage from occurring with Depakote.

Quite a few people take 25 mgs of Zoloft and 2.5 mgs of Lexapro, so maybe it's possible to take it slower and lower and benefit from going down to 10 mg Viibryd. I would tell your doc this is what you want to do if you still are experiencing these things in a few days, and don't take no for an answer.

I might try to give it another 2 or 3 days at least, you never know, things may calm down quite a bit. At least you know Viibryd is trying to do something with your brain.

Another option would be to add Depakote at maybe 500 mg and see if it helps within a few days.

Hang in there,

Morgan

I think FBs suggestion to use klonopin as needed is a good idea, only as needed though and at a small dose, maybe .5 mg.

I'm continuing with the 10mgs for now. My pdoc gave me a beta blocker for anxiety as benzos add to my depression. He's thinking if this fails to go with two mood stabilizers. He's thinking depakote or lithium. I'm just not sure how much antidepressant value there is in either one particularly depakote. Not many options as I've run the course on antidepressants.
