Drug for depression other than TCA or SSRI?

Posted by Laney on October 6, 2011, at 19:30:47

Does anyone have any recommendations? Like I said other than an SSRI or TCA?

I'm just not that savvy on all the different drugs out there and their uses.

Thanks!
Laney

Laney, I was just wondering how you were today. You were considering Effexor, yes?

I only know my own meds. Emsam seems to be working for me. But I need the stimulation it provides. I think your needs/symptoms differ from mine.

What symptoms are you wanting to address? (I apologize if you have already posted this, and I missed it.)

Remeron and Welbutrin both spring to mind.

Remeron is good if you have trouble sleeping or anxiety. Welbutrin is good if you feel lethargic and flat.

Remeron + Effexor can be very helpful in resistant depression

Abilify, risperadal and zyprexa all controlled my depression but made me gain weight. Parnate (an MAOI) finally controlled most of my depression without weight gain, but caused insomnia which I control with lorazaepem and trazadone.

Thanks for the replies.

Sometimes I think I'm bipolar because I'll have good days and then horrible ones. Lots of negative thoughts and I can't seem to push the negative thoughts or feelings away.

I have tried Wellbutrin but maybe I should give it another try because it doesn't have the weight gain effect Nortriptyline has for me.

Doesn't Remeron cause weight gain?

I'm a little scared to use effexor because I know it's hard to get off of. I'm already on paxil and don't need the two that are next to impossible to stop.

Any ideas? My Pdoc seems to be pretty fair to work with.

Thanks again everyone!

Laney

OK, so you actualy want an antidepressant that wont cause weight gain.

I'd try Effexor or Welbutrin - the fact that Welbutrin didnt work suggests you try effexor.

It isnt impossoble to get off, I cut out 300mg per day with very little trouble by tapering over 2 weeks, it just shouldnt be stopped cold turkey

MAOIs, some mood stabilizers like lamictal and lithium. Also the AAPs get a lot of use for depression. Im not sure AAPs are a good thing for depression though, unless nothing else works.

Laney why not give viibryd a go? Read the reviews. Good ones. I'd like to but don't think my insurance will pay for it. Love Phillipa

Thanks everyone! That gives me something to think about. P- I did think about Viibryd. I'll ask my doctor about it.

Can anyone show me where I can find proof or at least information for it's use for depression?

Thanks!
Laney
