Dinah you have diagnosed thyroid disease or is this a new finding? Thyroid nodules I personally know many that just have an ultrasound on them yearly to check for changes. My neice has them with hasimotos, a neighbor just has them no thyroid med, some can cause problems or be a problem. Do you have a goiter? How did you find out you have them ultrasound? Phillipa

The doctor felt it. He's going to do blood tests. If my thyroid function shows as normal (as it has in the past), he's going to do a biopsy.

But it looks as if many people have them, and few of them are cancerous.

I really wish doctors would get a course in how to say things like this. Instead of "I feel a nodule. It's this big (showing me a drawing of where he traced it on my neck). We'll do blood tests and if they come back normal, we'll do a biopsy. If they come back abnormal, we'll treat then check again for the nodule." Why can't they insert "It's not at all uncommon, particularly as people age, and most nodules are not malignant. But it's best to check just in case there's a problem. We'll...."

Or at least not check my blood pressure after telling me about a nodule. :)

And then say " Your Blood pressure is up here's a scrip " Let me see if I can find a good article. And if it's that time that's when thyroid problems show up. That I know from experience. Love Phillipa

Thanks, Phillipa. It doesn't look so scary.

But I'm still a bit scared.

Mine was not malignant. It was taken out to biopsied.

My integrative doctor wondered whether it was caused by heavy metal toxicity.

Years later I definitely had this. My mercury levels were the highest they had seen.

That will definitely be done unless the thyroid blood tests suggest another possibility.

It appears a lot of things can cause it. I'm sure it will be ok. I just hate suspense. Blood test results will be in by Monday. If they're normal (as my thyroid tests have always been, including a year or so ago), it will take a while to schedule a biopsy, and a while to get back results.

I nearly always peek at the end of the book or else I can't enjoy the rest of it. The next little while isn't going to be fun. Even if the blood tests come back abnormal, it'll just stretch out the period of anxiety.

I do like the new doctor, though. He's the only doctor since my neurologist who gave me such a thorough once over to find something like that. He seems to be knowledgeable and his proposals sound reasonable. I could just wish for a bit more skill in calming what are likely useless fears.

Dinah,

You have my sympathies for a weekend of suspense :-/. Hopefully you will find some distractions for yourself.

I wanted to add, along with the others that the nodules are fairly common. I have not had them, but friends have.

Hoping for good news on Monday.

Thanks. :)

Certainly I have too much work to do to be able to afford worry. So hopefully I'll be able to start obsessing about work again.

Nope. The doctor said to call Monday but when I called, they said it could be a few more days. If they haven't called by Friday I'll check again. And I've made a note to myself to go back to using the much faster lab I usually use. I've got my phone forwarded to my cell whenever I leave the house.

Of course, no matter what, this is just the first step. Next is either scheduling a biopsy, or treating the thyroid problem and then checking for it again.

I'm not overly concerned, in that I know chances are pretty high that it's nothing. But I find myself doing a lot of the things that I do to calm myself. I don't have the time to do that right now. I really don't.

Thanks for remembering. :)

I realized I'm thinking about this all wrong. Chances are it's nothing, and there's no reason to worry. And if it is something, why am I in such a hurry to find out? It's not like I'll be happier afterwards.

Dinah, my opinion is that anyone would be anxious waiting for the news. I think, of course you want to know! I would, though I would have all sorts of very intense feelings about it I'm sure.

I'm sorry you are having to wait this long, and I am very much hoping you do not spend another weekend waiting.

It probably is nothing, like you say, but personally, I find uncertainty is a real challenge. And the biopsy is a standard
out patient procedure. Very quick.

Hugs!

Labs were fine. Biopsy Monday.

I found out that insulin resistant people are more likely to get the nodules, so that makes it even more likely that it's not cancerous.

Thanks for the update. I know there is still the biopsy, but this sounds good, Dinah. I am glad you received the results before the weekend. I hope Monday's biopsy is easy and you receive the results more quickly than the bloodwork.

Dinah biopsy today? I still wouldn't worry as even if the nodule isn't good. I know several people who had thyroid cancer and all recovered quite nicely and no further problems. I do suggest goggling Mary Shoman thyroid site. She's very good advise sound. Let me know what happened today okay? Phillipa

Results no sooner than a week from now.

I'm still not worried, just wondering why the doctor didn't seem to want to reinforce my lack of worry. Is it a standard thing with them?

But I do like him, overall. He was really nice and explained each step of the procedure both before and while he was doing it. I had a kidney stone last night/this morning, so really the biopsy was a piece of cake in comparison.

He really seems to know his meds, too. I think the tweaking he did made perfect sense.

I hope that was it. Perhaps he doesn't want his patients to be angry with him if something is wrong. Or to feel like he has misled them.

Results no sooner than a week from now. I'm going to do my best to try to forget about it.

Hmmm... From the remarks he made as he took the sample, I see that the type is more likely to be a problem, but even so the chance goes from very small to still very small.

So, still no worries.
