Tardive Dsykinisia?

Posted by GOLFER1983 on September 23, 2011, at 20:49:06

Hi All -

Is it possible to get TD from 3 small doses of Risperdal? Like we're talking .25mg (liquid).

I am still having some tongue issues 4 months after I stopped. Doctor says it's psychosomatic as I've had some issues in the past that were (chronic dizziness, hand pain, knee pain, headaches) but it's VERY hard for me to believe this.

I am fully aware that the mind can amplifiy and cause numerous physical symptoms but, he keeps telling me not to worry about it and once anxiety is treated, it will go away, but it's ALL I worry about.

Thoughts?

What meds does he advise for anxiety as you do sound very anxious to me. Phillipa

Extremely unlikely. Maybe lingering EPS, since you only recently discontinued the risperdal?

I've had movement disorders from many APs. You just have to give it time to go away. Maybe a year or so. When in hospital they gave me some med that gave me uncontrolable swalowing. They took me off it right away. It was not that bad when off it but still found myself compeled to swalow. Even off the med and on a new one. It slowly went away. Probably took 3 years before it was totaly gone. Then on abilify I developed TD, my hands were shaky, I could not control it, made it hard to work. Stoped the abilify and I took cogentin, which is a anti TD med. The shakes were gone after a few months. Geodon gave me blurry vision, stoped it after 2 years on it, and it went away in a few months. I take zyprexa now which I've been on for 13 years and not TD. I also take perphenazine now for 3 years, I have the occasional twitch not sure if it from that or lingering abilify TD. Still take cogentin. Not sure if I still need it or not.

Hey Guys! Thanks so much for the informative follow ups. Means a lot.

See, my doctor keeps telling me that this is impossible after 3 doses but my intuition tells me that it IS possible.

Most people mention "I got TD after months on high doses, etc" like you did. Can 3 doses cause such an effect.

He believes this is psychosomatic at this point and that my anxiety clung to this side effect and "physically" this side effect has passed. He even brought up something called "Psychogenic Movement Disorder".

So confused!

No, three small doses of risperdel wouldnt cause tardive dyskensia or any prolonged EPS.

I am not trying to be mean or rude, but have you considered the psoability that the symptoms might be psychosomatic?

Have you tried an anticholinergic, such as benztroping (Cogentin)

either way, I think if they have persisted for more than 2 weeks, a review by a neurologist would be appropriate

I was thinking the same thing regarding psychosomatics. Psychosomatic phenomena are not "all in your head". Some of it is in the mind and some of it is in the brain. Symptoms are no less real than those of PTSD. I would guess that anxiety plays a part in the precipitation of your symptoms.

If your condition is not psychosomatic I would still be resistant to the idea that it is being caused by TD. Stranger things have happened, though. If an anticholinergic causes your symptoms to vanish, perhaps it is EPS after all.

Have you been on APs before? How long ago? What were the results?

Jono and SLS - Thank you for your responses.

My doctor thinks this is my obsessing. Part of my OCD. Just me having a compulsion with my tongue and mouth right now.

And, the movements are voluntary although compulsive. They are NOT involuntary like TD. I have to get this fear of "What if it's TD" out of my mind and move on.

OCD and anxiety aren't cool!

My initial impression of you is that you are open-minded, logical, constructive, and determined to get well. I am glad that you and your doctor have come to an understanding about your mouth movements and fears regarding TD.

And also if cogentin doesn't work, artane and klonopin can also help. Specifically artane really knocks the sh*t out if youre still taking antipsychotic medicaiton. klonopin helps temporarily.
