Lamictal, cannot tolerate.

Posted by stann on August 29, 2011, at 20:45:56

I started Lamictal three weeks ago for my GAD and was fine on 12.5 mg. I have been at 25mg for the last 11 days and I can barely think at times. I feel like my head is under pressure. It is almost impossible to do anything that requires me to think or concentrate. I feel angry and my OCD way of thinking is worse. Most of the side effects are cognitive. Years ago I was able to tolerate a high dose of this med but now like all the meds I have tried.I can not tolerate even the smallest doses anymore. I want to give Lamictal a chance but these feelings just keep getting worse. They are not easing with time. Does anyone have any feedback on this med. I think I am going to go back to 12.5 mg it helped in a very small way and perhaps the doc can add something to the Lamictal.

Thanks.

I'd just say the common sense thing--don't put yourself through Hell. If 12.5mgs helped in such a way that the side-effects and costs were outweighed by the benefits, then try 12.5.

Lamictal can be a very invasive drug. CE is right, go back down to 12.5 and stay there for a while. Or, try a the combination of a low dose of lithium(150 to 300 mg) , a low dose of depakote(500 mg)and a super low dose of Zoloft(12.5 mg) or Lexapro(2.5 mg).

Also, get on a primal diet where your body utilizes ketosis more for energy-eliminating grains, sugars, and heavy carb foods and including whole eggs, grass fed beef, nuts, veggies(kale, broccoli, and spinach), berries/fruit, wholemilk unsweeted cultured and minimally pasteurized dairy from grassfed cows, and coconut oil.

Thanks for the responses. I lowered the dose to 12.5 and my cognitive side effects seem to be easing, but I am sure I will need something else added to it because my GAD is powerful. Someone suggested that I add a very small dose clomipramine. Which might be a good idea because I cannot tolerate the newer types of medicine. Anyone have any experience with clomipramine?

Thanks.

Morgan, how is lamictal invasive? I'm starting and feel anxious.

Stann, are the benefits of 12.5 worth keeping it on board?

What benefits do you feel?

(sorry, I don't know the answers to your other question.)

floatingbridge, 12.5mg quiets my anxiety a little.Gives me a little better focus. I respond to very small doses of phyc meds. I am very senitive to them. Plus, I inject Testosterone twice a week and it enhances my Anxiety. The 12.5mg of Lamictal help keep the anxiety down a notch after injections.
