Facial Tics / Anxiety / OCD / or ADHD?`

Posted by GOLFER1983 on August 27, 2011, at 16:14:48

Hey Guys -

I am 27 and have had issues with facial tics over the last 3 months. Before this episode, I have not had much issues except some eye blinking in the past for VERY short periods (a week of stress, etc).

This started when I took Abilify for 2 days at .25mg (liquid baby dose!). I then developed stiff lips and hurt for me to speak. We discontinued the Abilify and, shortly after, I developed weird mouth movements (opening / closing of my mouth), some blowing my cheeks, and my tongue began to hurt.

I asked my doctor about Tardive Dyskinisia and he ASSURED me that it's not this. 2 days at this dose can, in no way, cause this. But, we took precaution for EPS symptoms and Acute Dystonia. He mentioned this would go away in 5-7 days (sometimes sooner) and that all would be fine.

This was 3 months ago. Since then, the symptoms have moved from opening and closing my mouth and tongue pain, to nose wrinking, which classifies as a facial tic and my lips feel numb.

I have OCD and ADHD so my doctor believes, at this point, that it's the underlying and untreated anxiety causing these movements and will go away with the correct treatment. I have a hard time believing this even though (at this point) 3 DIFFERENT second opinions have told me similar.

This is causing a lot of distress and social embarassment!

I'd like to note that in the past, I have had a lot of psychosomatic complaints (knee pain, hand tingling, dizziness, etc.) that all lasted awhile but went away on their own with no physical cause so this could definitely be originating from the anxiety/OCD.

Anyone have any ideas on this?!? Ah!

Tourettes, Transient Tic Disorder, ADHD, OCD, Anxiety, or a reaction to 2 days of Abilify 3 months ago could be causing this but I have no idea :(

Thanks so much for your support.

Anxiety can cause every symptom on the books. I even had an inabity to move my arm due to anxiety.

Get checked out but if they say it is anxiety, it most likely is.

Hey! Thanks for that info! Inability to move your arm? Geez. Anxiety can really cause any number of strange unexplainable physical sensations, movements, etc.

Due to the psychosomatic symptoms I've had in the past, I wouldn't put this past anxiety causing them.

But, WHY, is it so hard for me to take 4 experienced doctors expert opinions and just accept the fact that this nose wrinkling and tongue movements are not Tourettes or TD but simple, chronic and significant anxiety disorder?

Not trusting doctors is all part of the disease unfortunately.

Try some cogentin a dose and see if they disappear as if from the antipsychotic they should and if not most likely anxiety component. Phillipa
