missed periods on Geodon or other meds?

Posted by sienna on October 11, 2002, at 16:33:02

Hi everybuddy,

Im wondering if anyone else has missed periods when on any meds. Im taking a very low dose of Geodon, and Ive missed my last period (well its 2 weeks late). Theres a slim possiblilty that Im pregnant, but I really dont think I am.

hehe you are funny.
I know what you mean, because I was on another drug and completely missed a period but the next one came like clockwork exactly when it was supposed to. And I hadnt had sex at all., But this time I have so Im a little worried. But I really think it is the Geodon... well I hope so anyway or me and my ex boyfriend are REALLY going to have a problem...

Hello Sienna.

How are you?

Neuroleptic antipsychotics are known to cause amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea. This is usually the result of the drugs causing an excess in the secretion of prolactin, a hormone responsible for supporting lactation.

I know that the older antipsychotics (Haldol, Thorazine, Prolixin, Loxitane, etc.) have this as a side effect. Of the newer "atypical" antipsychotics, Risperdal most closely resembles the older drugs, and is most liable to cause amenorrhea. My S.O. went seven months without having her periods while taking Risperdal at dosages above 0.5mg. As for Geodon (ziprasidone), the medical literature generally accepts it as having a reduced liability to cause hyperprolactinemia (high prolactin). However, if my recollection is at all accurate, Geodon blocks dopamine receptors to a significant degree relative to the other atypicals, and nearly equal to Risperdal. For this reason, I would guess it possible for Geodon to mess things up a little.

However, if it is at all possible that you are pregnant, taking one of those home pregnancy tests won't hurt. If not it will ease your mind, and if so you can contact your doctor about medications, etc.

I have gone 2 to 3 months without a period and then have very light or very heavy periods. Sometimes it just sucks!!!!

I've been on Zyprexa for several months and haven't had a period for about five months now, and I have to say I surely don't miss it; however I don't know how safe that is. I"m in the process of switching to something else, though, for other reasons.

I started Gideon a week ago and I immediately started feeling nauseous.. which is a side effect. But 2 nights ago (and as of today) I started having awful pain in my midsection all around to my back, hot/cold flashes, and a missed period. Needless to say I thought I was pregnant but the blood test came back negative. So I'm stopping the Gideon to see if it stops... Hopefully :-/

It was Geodon.

So I stopped Geodon (spelt wrong last time lol) about 4-5 days ago and it was a living hell, I ended up in the hospital. I started my period finally 10 days late, extremely heavy and I was so sick. But the symptoms have subsided and the only thing I did differently was stop taking it. So if you take this medication, please please be aware of the signs your body may give you. They were so bad I went through 2 ct scans thinking it was my kidneys then they thought a false negative pregnancy (which is still possible considering the amount of blood loss.) I wish this drug would have worked.. I heard it does wonders- just not for me.

Good luck everyone.

To all,
Geodon caused my heart to misfire. A very dangerous med for some! Be careful.
