As far as I'm aware, there are no interactions between the two. I remember reading that there have been reported cases of interactions between Mogadon and MAOIs and between Librium and MAOIs. Never heard of any problems with Xanax though.

Thanks. Can I start another maoi immediately, or do I need to wait a certain time between emsam and the other?

Thanks again.

The standard is two weeks. However, if you want to get *really* technical, it depends on:

The halflives of Emsam and its active metabolites.

Someone else with more knowledge, hopefully, will weigh in on this.

Best of luck darling - btw I haven't forgotten about our babblemail convo. Been out and about all day - but I will get back to you by this eve.

Yep. No contraindications between any of the MAOIs and any benzos. Nardil in particular may be synergistic with benzos though - an active metabolite inhibits GABA-T (the enzyme that breaks down GABA.); but not synergistic in a dangerous way. Jedi's regimen is almost identical to mine--he takes 0.5 Klonopin with Nardil and I take 0.5 Klonopin twice a day with mine.

I have taken Nardil with both Klonopin and Xanax, and temazepam for sleep, without incident.

I've taken Parnate with Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan and temazepam for sleep also without incident.

(Note: Was only using one of Klonopin/Xanax/Ativan at a time. Benzo polypharmacy = not the greatest idea...)

Benzos are fine with MAOIs. I've taken both xanax and ativan with parnate.

I took ensam for a month and it didn't work. Ended up in the premier Harvard psychiatric teaching hospital and they did a two week washout before starting parnate.

Thanks. My patch is off. F'it. Today is day one.

Gawd, until then, I have benzos and norco. A real party.

I don't know about Nardil or Emsam so I don't want to say anything wrong about them, but Parnate + benzodiazepines is definitely ok. Of course, one should be careful and all, but they can be combined.

The problem with switching from MAOI to MAOI is that one doesn't just to take into account the pharmacokinetic halflife (how long until the drug is out of the body), but also the pharmacodynamic halflife (how long until the effects disappear). For example, tranylcypromine (Parnate) has a very short half-life, it'll be completely gone within less than 24hrs, but the MAOI inhibition continues up to 14 days after the last dosage. Because 14 days is the time span during which the body fully replaces its MAOI enzymes.

What you *could* do is go 7 days without anything, and then 7 days at the lowest possible dose with a new MAOI. That *should* be alright.

However, I agree with Philippa, doesn't this all depend on your doc, what he's going to prescribe and when? If he doesn't give you the script before two weeks are over, you can't really do anything :D.. and if he does give you the script, he will probably instruct you what exactly to do.

Good luck, I hope going off Emsam won't be (too) difficult!
