anxiety and xanax

Posted by emmanuel98 on June 16, 2011, at 19:38:19

I have developed this terrible anxiety problem. I never had problems with anxiety before. My p-doc didn't want to prescribe benzos because I have a history of addiction to drugs (opiates).
But my DBT therapist called him (they met with me two weeks ago and agreed that she would be my primary therapist, that I would make a contract with her for three months to try to stabilize myself) and told him she felt if I didn't get some relief from this, I wouldn't be able to stick with my contract to keep myself alive and safe with her.

So he agreed to give me a week's prescription for xanax == 0.5mg tid. I took half a pill this afternoon and for the first time in nearly three weeks, I felt okay. I wasn't tired, spacey or high. I just felt some relief from this endless physical sensation of intense anxiety.

I am so happy. This is the first time in nearly three weeks when I have felt okay.

I have to be very careful with the xanax and not overdue it, but today a 0.25 mg dose made me feel okay, so I will try to keep it at that level.

I can't believe how much better I feel. It's wierd to have a psych drug work so well and so fast.

hey. I wouldn't worry too much about addiction. I used to abuse the hell out of benzos...I even ordered massive quantities off the internet from less-than-reputable sources so I could drown out my misery. My shrink found out and, of course, wouldn't prescribe benzos at the time.

A couple years later, I ended up with that same shrink after a nervous breakdown. She kindly agreed to give me a couple months worth of Klonopin at a standard dose as long as I passed a drug test after a couple months. I passed it, I eventually tapered, and I never abused the tranquilizer.

I'm not saying go crazy on the xanax, but I am saying that self-control can be learned and I hope your doctor understands that.

If you need a tranquilizer for lon ger than 2 weeks, Tranxene (chlorazepate) might be worth considering, it is very long acting, taken once a day at bedtime, so you dont get the sudden highs and lows associated with short acting, fast onest drugs like Xanax.

It is also much easier to taper when you no longer need it.

Having said that, 0.25mg of Xanax is a low dose, you shouldnt have any issues with that unless you take it for an extended period

Welcome to the world of Xanax! Xanax is one of the best drugs psychiatry has in its arsenal. It works, and works well. IMHO it is the most effective drug in its class with the least side effects...

You mentioned some substance abuse in your history - if you can prove to your providers that you can be responsible with this drug, you may have discovered something that can *really* help you.

Congrats!!

Xanax is amazing. Please enjoy every minute of feeling good. It doesn't necessarily escalate too much.

I gave it up, stupidly. Now I'm a member of the benzo of the week club.

Xanax is queen.

You deserve a little peace. You'll manage your usage. Congratulations.

I agree took .25 for many many years without ever taking more than prescribed. At one time a doc wanted me to take .5 but didn't like the feeling so backed down. It has slight antidepressant effects also!!!! Enjoy Phillipa
