what causes nardil weight gain

Posted by viper1431 on June 9, 2011, at 1:27:54

Can nardil do something to cause weight gain other than eating more? I've put on 2 kilos in the last 2 weeks that i've been on it yet i'm not eating much at all, thyroid tests point more towards over active so it isn't that either.

I wonder what the internet wiki says about it? I've never looked. I'm sorry you are gaining weight l-2 of TSH is according to Endocrine Society optimal but T3 reveserse and other parts of thyroid also need to factored in. Phillipa

Most doctors would say its simply because it increases appetite and makes you eat more, but many patients seem to feel that it alters metabolism in some way (this is almost entirely ancedotal, very little evidence for it)

It's rediculous.. i'm barely eating so i don't see where the weight could possibly come from.. 2 kilos in 2 weeks.. i don't think i've even eaten 2 kilos of food =/

To answer your question, I think yes, but I don't know what mechanism is involved.

You've been on Nardil two weeks? Do you have any beneficial effects yet?

nah not yet, it's actually being rather wierd. I've been on it before and normally by now i'd be getting low blood pressure, some sexual dysfunctriona nd constipation.. but this time nothing except feeling more depressed without suicidal thoughts like when i tried parnate a couple years back.

In my experience, weight gain is independent of, but exacerbated by, increased appetite. I believe Nardil affects glucose/insulin dynamics. Whatever it is, it is definitely a metabolic effect.

Isn't there any tests/ blood tests that can point towards anythign happening or is not enough known about it? Is it likely to continue this way ot stop.

I'm currently going through a feeling drunk period that io usually get on nardil which is interesting.

i'd guess there is almost certainly something with appetite, but a good chance of something else too.

i thought i posted something about this relatively recently, but i can't find it.

oh i found it. http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20110321/msgs/981503.html just a bunch of jumbled thoughts though.

THere might be something about the lowered liver function, plus less activation of sympathetic nervous system, compared to parnate. Also, there is conflicting evidence, but parnate seems better at downregulating 5t2 receptors, though i'd guess phenelzine is better at activating them. that would affect appetite.

I kind of hate how there is so little evidence on the mechanisms of old drugs.

also keep in might short term weigh fluctuation can be related to salt/glucose and water.
