Voices

Posted by Phidippus on June 3, 2011, at 16:20:25

This past couple years I developed a symptom I never experienced before: voices in my head telling me what to do!

Is this a dissociative symptom or a psychotic one?

P
Lithium 1200 mg
Clomipramine 200 mg
Vyvanse 50 mg
Zonisamide 300 mg
Abilify 30 mg
Pindolol 30 mg

I am by no means an expert, and don't want to scare you, but:

How long have you been on Abilify and what was the reason your doc added it?

Could be tardive psychosis, hopefully not, and hopefully not permanent!

This is one reason I will *never* put antipsychotics in my body except if I develop psychotic symptoms. I know of one person (in Real Life) who developed rebound psychosis after discontinuing Abilify when he had never had psychosis before starting the drug.

I hear voices a lot (supposedly Bipolar I of some sort).

It could be any number of things. You're on a lot of meds, including an amphetamine, so that could be it. It could be what sounds like low-level psychosis, which some people learn to deal with through therapy. Could be stress.

I really don't know what you'd do with meds to address the situation, if its that distressing; I mean, you're already on lithium and full-dose Abilify.

Does it bother you? Even shrinks aren't supposed to diagnose a problem unless it causes "functional impairment," so if you're just hearing voices and its no big deal, I wouldn't stress.

The voices unsettle me when they happen but in the long run they don't bother me much. I developed the voices in 2009 when I had a nasty mixed depressed episode. That year the voices invaded my head on 4 different occasions. I came to my current medicine regiment after the voices started. I think the worst I experienced was a conversation between voices in my head. I have heard one voice while on my current regiment, when I was under great duress.

I started Abilify way after the voices started. I've experienced one voice while on the Abilify.

I agree with Philipa - maybe consider clozapine if the Ability isn't working.

ADHD/BP/OCD. My doctor feels the 'voices' are more of a dissociative symptom brought on by anxiety. My OCD is fairly severe and it has taken 3 years to come up with my clomipramine/abilify/zonisamide trifecta (OCD-treat first with SSRI or Clomipramine, augment with atypical antipsychotic, further augmentation with glutamate antagonist-Zonisamide). I don't know if Clozaril would be advantageous.

You wrote,[...I developed...is this...].
From looking at the list of drugs here, if you are taking them all together then there is the potential for dangerous consequences from their combination.
One is when lithium is combined with clomipramine. What can happen is that there could be neurotoxicity and psychotic symptoms.
There are other things that can happen to you from the other combinations.
I could get into the molecular chemistry of the combinations if you like.
