Parnate for psychotic depression?

Posted by Christ_empowered on May 29, 2011, at 8:34:23

I'm so over Celexa. I mean, yes, it works, and its cheap as can be ($10/90 day supply), but I just can't deal with the apathy. I stopped taking it once I realized that my car was a mess, my apartment was a mess, I don't have a job yet, but...I just don't care. Apathy of that magnitude simply cannot be tolerated; I need what little initiative and motivation I have left after the 30mgs of Abilify has done its "thing" to, you know, try to put together a life worth living. (The Abilify, for better or for worse, seems like its going to be a part of my life for a long, long time).

Now that I've stopped taking it, I actually feel a bit better in the sense that I'm more active, motivated, and less apathetic. That's awesome. However, psychotic depression really isn't my thing, so I'm looking for an antidepressant/mood-elevator/anxiolytic/whatever that will work with the Abilify to keep the the worst of "the blues" at bay.

So...Parnate. Is it terrible, in terms of side-effects and the diet? Does it work for psychotic depression? What's the typical dosage (I looked, and it seems like dosages vary wildly in the literature, so I thought I'd ask for patient experiences).

Thanks for any input y'all might have.

I wouldn't recommend it for depression with psychotic features - it has made me manic at times, which is unfortunate because it's also one of the only things that's EVER worked; and I know of one other person with no history of psychosis that Parnate drove into a first-time psychotic episode. Probably due to being a MAOA/B inhibitor and *also* a dopamine releasing agent.

There was some formulation (Europe only?) that combined Parnate with a typical AP, but its name escapes me.

Have you ever tried Nardil? Best functional time of my 20s was on a combo of Nardil and Xanax (later Temazepam was added for insomnia as Xanax is a poor sleep aid. If taken before bed time, Xanax tends to cause me to have waketime anxiety.)

Best of luck, man; I've read a lot of your posts and I know you've done your fair share of suffering (like most of us in here.)

Being a mental patient can be so taxing - I wish the science were as far ahead as in other disciplines. Instead, as many in the field will admit, finding the right drugs/diagnoses really is like throwing darts.

CE,

I was up last night slogging through the maoi's. I thought I read about parnate helping with psychotic features--but this is to serious to rely on my Googling. And I am not about to contradict zonked.

Let me see if I can refind my source.

What does your doc say?

Wiki's contraindication of psychosis and parnate is unequivocal.

Sorry. But that's just wiki. You have a doc and other board members here.

Could you try lexapro or been there done that?
