'Tinnitis + Bupropion

Posted by former poster on January 13, 2011, at 18:28:56

"Tinnitis is caused by loss of hearing, nothing else". This is what the last 4 Drs have said to me. I know for a fact that the Bupropion and Naproxen I'm on gives me tinnitis. Therefore it makes me deaf? I am so fed-up with Physicians and Psychiatrists not knowing their profession. I saw a Eye ear nose and throat specialist yesterday. He said that "none of my meds can cause tinnitis". I know my hearing would improve if I could get off these 2 medications.

Am I slowly destroying my hearing by taking these meds? I have 45% loss at this point

If your doctor does not agree then tell them you are going to stop taking it. See if the hearing gets better. Go to anouther doc and get a better med.

fp,
You wrote,[...caused by loss of hearing...give me tinnitus...none can cause tinnitus...get off these ...am I ..destrying my hearing by takung these...?].
Loss of hearing can be a cause of what you are experincing but it is not the only cause. There is a lot of research in regards to people that have hearing loss hearing sounds. Some hear clicking-like sounds. Some hear formed music and there are reports of some hearing full chiors. Most of the songs are religious or patriotic.
There are many cases that are brought on by drugs. In particular but not limited to psychotropic drugs, such as the ones that you are taking. Some cases remit when the drug is stopped. Some do not. A tumor could be a cause. There are about 100 cases in the liturature. Many cases can be unreported.
These sounds can change. Some things to look up;
A. Charles Bonnet Syndrome
B. Psychotropic drugs, hearing loss
C. Psychotropic drugs, brain damage

My tinnitis is a ringing hiss. I can easily check my pulse without feeling an artery because I can hear my pulse 24/7. Wikipedia has quite extensive info on tinnitis.

I am amazed and shocked at how quickly a Physician will dismiss this condition as something so insignificant.

Also did some goggling and found the same as you did the info that is. Some meds when go off it gets better. Kind of like my loss of taste and smell 7 years ago doc thinks it was biaxin xl. Oh I saw recently an ENT that did an MRI to check again and scope up nose. He also said some people develop a virus as they feel mine was and wake up deaf. How come no one ever talks of these things? No, you are not destroying your hearing by taking the meds. I have tinnitus, and was just reading this little brochure at Walmart that lists over 50 meds that can cause tinnitus. Meds that effect blood pressure supposedly are certain to cause it, as well as antidepressants. You won't go deaf from it. It is just annoying background noise.
My tinnitus was/is likely also caused by playing very loud heavy rock music...lol. Just remember, a large majority of people also need glasses as they get older (myself included.) It is just a part of life. :)

I had tinnitus on bupropion as well. It started off as a higher pitched noise then a lower hum. I stopped taking it after a week on 300mgs. It took awhile for the ringing to go away, but it is much better now.

Sorry to hear that Phillipa. Your sense of smell hasn't returned yet? Seems like health care professionals are geared for mainstream illnesses that they can fix with a pill.

The Kidneys are related to hearing in Chinese medicine. The Kidneys can represent the hormonal balance of the adrenal glands. In this case, buproprion is an NRI, and norepinephrine is one of the hormones released by the adrenal glands.

Kidney deficiency is similar to adrenal insufficiency, and may also present with symptoms such as low back pain, weakness in the legs, night sweats, urinary problems, low libido, and sexual dysfunction. Psyche drugs in general seem to tax the kidneys, hence all the weird urinary and sexual symptoms, along with apathy and lack of drive.

There are many herbal formulas that can address the underlying cause of tinnitus. There's no way you're going to remedy drug-induced tinnitus with more drugs. Nutrition and supplementation maybe, but herbs are the best bet for dealing with issues that result from chronic exposure to medication.

somehow id suspect naproxen to be the cause of tinnitus rather than wellbutrin, but wellbutrin could be the problem too.
Ive always had some level of ringing in my ears, I just tune it out. But NSAIDs make it 10x worse.

Former Poster,

With all due respect, your ENT is totally wrong. Tinnitus is a major side effect of Bupropion.

By the way, a nurse practitioner told me the same thing. I wonder if they went to the same school of propaganda:).

As an FYI, I was formerly on a cocktail of meds that included Wellbutrin and Remeron. I feel that Remeron was partially responsible for my hearing loss and that Wellbutrin definitely caused tinnitus. Because of these concerns, I got off all meds. My hearing has stabilized.

Oh and other horrific symptom I had was pulsating tinnitus in which I felt like there was a heartbeat in my ear. I haven't had that at all now that I am off the meds.

Personally, I would get off the meds in a heartbeat but of course, it is your decision. Knowing what i now know, I wouldn't have hesitated for a moment. But of course, I thought I would have a serious relapse if I went off of meds so I stayed on them even though they were destroying my hearing.

It never happened in spite of dealing with issues like job instability and a relative's death.

Good luck.

I have had the pulsating tinnitus 24/7 since the 1990's. I was thinking of giving Remeron another try but after reading your post I'll pass. Seems like all the psych meds are only a trade off. If I boost my serotonin with SSRI's & MAOI's it costs me my sexual performance and enjoyment. Bupropion has the most tolerable side effects even with the tinnitus, but is the least effective. Maybe I should try smoking and alcohol? Seems to work for just about every one of my friends.
