Upping Geodon / No AD?

Posted by SheilaC on January 1, 2011, at 18:46:41

I have tried and tried so many antidepressants and they all seem to give me terrible side effects.

I have been stable so far on 60mg of Geodon (but my doc tells me we can go way up on that if we need to).

The reason I recently tried Pristiq was due to the continued irritability I have.

I also take a small dose of Adderall for my ADHD and it helps a little with my mood - but can make me edgy.

I am wondering if going up to 80mg of Geodon would help address the irritability? My guess is that it would.

Right now I take Geodon in the evening and sleep pretty good. Can I take all 80mg at night or do I HAVE to split the dose? It makes me sleepy during the day.

What does Geodon mainly do anyway? Does it have any antidepressant effects?

Great questions as always thought it an atypical antipsychotic. Phillipa

Right now there is a theory in effect that anti depressants increase mania in bipolar and schizo effective patients.Removing anti depressants is actualy a new strategy,if they werent helping id ssee how this works out, however if you feel depression id make sure the doc knew that and keep trying the diffcult road to finding the right one, good luck and bless

Geodon is an anti-psychotic. If I remember, you have bipolar type 2? It can help with your mood swings. I was on Geodon for a while. Before I started taking it, I did some research to see if it would have an anti-depressant effect. From what I read, it can. It can also help anti-depressants to work more effectively. Try it as a monotherapy for your depression and see how it goes. Of course talk to your doctor before hand.

I am a little surprised that you didn't know what Geodon does and *I blame your pdoc for that*. Before taking any med, it is important for your pdoc to explain to you what you are taking and why. You should add your own research on top of that if possible. Always know what you are taking and why, as well as possible side effects or drugs interactions. Your pharmacy can help you with possible drug interactions! :)

My pdoc said Geodon can help depression although I did not experience this. It did completely stop an acute mixed/manic episode so I know I can use it for that in the future. It just didn't do anything for me as a maintenance medication. I was on 60mg.

I would try 80mg. You can actually go up as high as 180mg. Normally you have to split the dose, you could take more at night because of the drowsiness, maybe 60mg at night and 20mg in morning?

ask you doctor about Zyprexa, it has sedating properties and it may just do well with the Adderall because yes I know anxiety can happen with adderall.

I was on Geodon 160mg and it made me feel...not the best.

Try Zyprexa - or try to ask you doctor about it. It works!!! but the only thing with Zyprexa is weight gain.

I did try Zyprexa and loved it! But hated the weight gain.

Since I really can't do an antidepressant, I may stick with my Geodon and add some lithium for depression. Hopefully, lithium will help with depression?

I hope to soon go off of Geodon because of weight gain, but I have been as high as 120mg. My doctor lets me play with the dosing to decide what works. I've found that taking 60mg three hours before bed time, and another 60mg one hour before bed time works for me, but I am also taking depakote with it. In any case, it is not necessary to take any during the day, according to my doctor, and I don't think I could stay awake if I did.
