Is this combo safe? I was taken off Celexa and Lamictal so as to start Maoi after two weeks-no titration btw, as I've mentioned before on another post. Got super depressed. Doctor put me Elavil in the interim till I can take the maoi. Im a little concerned because online it seems as though you can't combine the two. But he told me they have been doing it for 50 yrs. Obviously emsam hasn't been arouund that long but I get that he meant Maois in general.
Is this guy off his rocker-well he is but thats another story-or is it ok to take them together?

put me on it for sleep btw-non of the medications that I have tried in the past, with other drs. that don't seem to interact with maoi

For claification you went off the celexa and lamictal cold turkey so to speak without decreasing the doses prior to stopping. And then depression was a concern so the TCA? And you are starting EMSAM at what dose? It's my understanding and only my own that EMSAM is stronger than celexa. So does your doc want you to stop the TCA and then start the EMSAM on it's own and you'd like to combine the two? If so why not try the EMSAM alone first? Sounds like a lot of med changes in a two week time frame. Do you like the doc or do you feel you might want a second opinion? Phillipa

It is probably safe, especially if it is a low dose of elavil for sleep. Elavil is not a strong serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and the patch probably won't increase serotonin as potently as say nardil. Also elavil's metabolite is nortriptyline, which according to Dr. Gilman at www.psychotropical.com, says it makes the MAOI safer if you accidentally eat some tyramine.

I would be extremely cautious with this combination.
If you are at all sensitive to serotonin, this could be quite dangerous. I personally would consult with my prescribing psycho-pharmacologist about whether it's safe for you.
My pdoc who is perhaps on the conservative side, but is quite exceptionally well regarded, was vehement in telling me not to take it.
It's important to consult on these questions, despite the information that we at babble collectively have.
