Need help and advice with parnate

Posted by roscopeeco on December 25, 2010, at 6:33:17

I have been on Parnate for 16 days. I am on 50mg right now and am experiencing extreme hypotension. I can barely get out of the bed. I am going to decrease my dose and try to move up slower. I am wondering what a fair shot would be to give this medication a chance. I am also wondering that if I am experiencing this extreme hypotension now at 50mg does this mean that I can't tolerate this medication at higher doses.

Thank You,
JF

That is the most logical course of action. Most people can ultimately tolerate more Parnate if they raise the dosage more gradually.

60-80mg for 4 weeks. This means that you have not yet reached a target dosage. So, you cannot count these past 16 days as part of the 4 week trial. Be prepared for heart palpitations at some point. I think this is a passing phenomenon and does not indicate toxicity.

Absolutely not.

Thank You Scott.

Does the drug just kick in or should I be seeing gradual improvement. It is just crazy to think I am so weak and hypotensive.

Parnate sometimes produces afternoon fatigue. I don't know what the percentage of patients experience this effect. For me, the antidepressant effect of Parnate came on gradually. If you are going to evaluate how you feel after two weeks, you need to look for subtle improvements.

I think I might ask my Dr. to initiate the blood tests after a month to see what level MAO is being inhibited.

Are there blood levels to see where a person is on Maois? I always thought only TCA's? Phillipa

You know after I wrote the post I checked to see if there was a blood test for it because I could have sworn I saw it on Dr. Ivan's depression central, but maybe I am mistaken as I didn't find any such test in the google search.

That's a shame a test would be so beneficial for all those on any class of med. Phillipa
