Long term Geodon effects?

Posted by SheilaC on November 15, 2010, at 16:16:06

Has anyone been taking Geodon for a long period of time? I am wondering if it could have long term negative effects on my heart. My mother has acute atrial fib and takes heart medicine.

I currently do not have any heart problems, but I wonder if Geodon could damage my heart in the long term. I know that all meds have side effects and issues.

Especially because I also take Adderall. Ugh - am I doing damage to my heart?

SheilaC,
You wrote,[...has anyone...?]
I am unsure as to what you are wanting as a response to your post. If you could post answers to the following, then I could have the opportunity to respond accordingly.
1A. Are you wanting a response here only from someone that has taken Geodon for a long time?
2A. If so, how long?
1B. If so, what could be a rationale for only wanting responses from those that have taken the drug for a long time?
2B. Are you aware of an FDA warning letter to the manufacturer of the drug?

You are correct, all meds have direct effects on undesired things and have issues. I haven't studies the heart ramifications of your med. But I think it is within the comfort zone to say that pretty much all of our meds have heart risk of one kind or another. Every med poses a benefit/risk scenario that has to be decided on an individual basis. For example, let's say geodon works very well for person X. Which is better....for person X to have 30 good productive years on geodon, or for person X to have 50 non-geodon miserable years?

I would venture a guess that our commonly accepted food choices at the grocery store, the average typical American way of doing things, are far more caustic to the heart and the body in a multitude of ways than geodon is. But that's just me. Take it with a grain of salt. Salt is good, as long as it is natural sea salt or himalayan salt. :-)

Hi Lou,

1A. & 2A - any response is fine with me. Experience or knowledge of anyone that has either taken it or knows about it.

2B - I am unaware of the FDA warning letter to the manufacturer. If you have a link or can shed some light on that, it would be of interest to me.

Thanks Lou!

I took Geodon for 2 years and just had a EKG (heart check) and my heart is fine. I don't take
geodon any more. It didn't help with my head. I know that geodon has a warning with it that it can cause a prolongation of the Qtc interval. I don't know if thats what the heart problems are?

SheilaC,
You wrote,[...any response is fine...FDA warning letter..if you have a link..it would be of interest...].
I have a large body if information concerning the drug in question here. And I would like to share this information with you.
This information , however, comes from notable psychiatrists and medical doctors and researchers that have a perspective that involves incorperating into it the foundation of Judaism and also aspects of the historical record involving psychiatry and its uses durring a particular era of time that I am not allowed to post about here nor post here where you could find this information.
Now I am trying to save lives here and to save people from getting a life-ruining condition as a result of taking psychotropic drugs. The information that I am prohibited from posting here, and also prohibited from posting links to where you could find this information, IMO could offer you the information that you are requesting. I am doing what I think is right and in my heart, since I am trying to give information to save lives here and I am prohibited from doing so in many cases. So if I try and I am prohibited from posting this information here or how to find it,then in my heart, the blood of those that die from these drugs will not be upon me.
Here is a link to my outstanding request to Mr. Hsiung concerning part of this.

This is most revealing as to the motivation behind your interruptions. You say you want to save lives. It sounds to me like you're trying to get a clear conscience. Over us.

Brainerd,
Sorry that I am late to this thread, but the subject line on your post above intrigues me. May I interrupt and ask what you're referring to? (Or is this a joke I am slow on the uptake on?)
Thanks for cluing me in,

'Brainerd'... I like that one.

Cloudy, thanks for asking about the post title. The phrase 'who brought you out of Egypt' is part of the first of the Ten Words, better known as the Ten Commandments - the instructions that God gives to his people Israel in the Bible (Exodus 20:2-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21). The phrase is to remind believers that YHWH is a God of deliverance, who has destined them to be free from slavery. I used this phrase to imply that Lou's burden of 'saving souls' may be a treacherous form of slavery - a burden seemingly imposed by God himself.

Sorry, I'm a crappy typist.
In light of your post's meaning, I expect this thread might be redirected to the Faith Board.
The other thing that occurs to me is that perhaps your implication might be misplaced.

Thanks for giving me and others a clue.

Obviously Lou believes god has sent him on a mission to keep people from dying on psych meds. So this informs every single post Lou writes and is critical to understanding why he writes them. That is his reality. It is not reality, but for him that is how he experiences it. Every time you are about to reply to Lou, just think to yourself. Lou believes god talks to him and believes god put him on a mission to keep people from dying on psych drugs... and that Lou believes that the foundation of Judaism, which was founded almost 4000 years ago has something tie in with Nazism and eugenics and psychiatry, which was actually used to push eugenics. Lou believes current psychiatric practice is still based tied to nazi psychiatry, which was pervert, like almost everything that the Nazi's did.

Keep this in mind when responding to his posts, and think of the state of reality this person is in. Then realize you can't reason with someone like that and don't post replies, because there is NO POINT, you will constantly be having the same arguments with Lou until the day you croak, UNLESS of course you are providing balance for a new comer to the forum. You can't argue with someone who believes they are on a mission from god.

Please don't post anything that could lead others to feel put down.

But please don't take this personally, either, this doesn't mean I don't like you or think you're a bad person, and I'm sorry if this hurts you.

More information about posting policies and tips on alternative ways to express yourself, including a link to a nice post by Dinah on I-statements, are/is in the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#enforce

Lou, I'm also sorry if you felt hurt.

Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.

Thanks,

Bob

Back To The Original Question

Posted by Brainbeard on November 24, 2010, at 2:29:26

In reply to Long term Geodon effects?, posted by SheilaC on November 15, 2010, at 16:16:06

... as per Philippa's request.

I've been studying Geodon extensively before and during the period I was taking it. The results of research studies boil down to this: Geodon prolongs the QT-interval mildly, but pronouncedly. Prolonging the QT-interval means influencing your heartbeat in such a manner that you are more prone to cardiac trouble. Note though that Geodon only causes a mild prolongation. This will not normally be a problem, but the risk can be greatly increased when you add other drugs that also prolong QT-interval. So that's something to keep in mind. Meanwhile, Geodon's effects on the heart are NOT dose-dependent. Even a very large dose would not prolong QT-interval much more than a small dose would. There have been reports of people taking an overdose, without any consequences for (cardiac) health.
As far as I know, long-term QT-prolongation by itself doesn't cause damage to the heart.

Hope this helps.
