Sleep Deprivation + Parnate (or any other med)

Posted by maoi_wowee on November 2, 2010, at 4:32:57

Anyone tried sleep deprivation to supplement their medication? I've tried total sleep deprivation a handful of times and each time it has completely cured my depression, though only for the day following the night of missed sleep.

It's certainly not a substitute for my parnate, but once in a while when I know I need or want to be depression free for a day, it's a wonderful thing to do. If only it lasted...

Yes, I have, but you're right its not a permanant fix, unfortunately.

I'd just like to know the mechanism.

Parnate alone, gave me pretty bad sleep deprivation, so I didn't really need to add more to it.

In my humble opinion sleep deprivation is extremly bad. What i think happens is we get a form of mild mania from it,for some of us this is better then the horrid depression we normaly feel.

However sleep docs exsist cause sleep is crucial, many reapair processes happen whhile u sleep, ask a body builder why he sleeps, its crucual to muscle growth,as much as we hate it,we all need a good ight sleep to let our body to its repair work.

I don't think I ever got mania or hypomania from sleep deprivation. Usually, on the SD day, I feel physically exhausted and overall yukky, but...

something changes in brain metabolism. For me, the horrible chronic lingering rumination and mental pain all of a sudden switches off. All of a sudden I become more tuned into the environment and 'outside of my head'.

No, it can't be used everyday, but I think it is a useful tool for those who do not respond fully to antidepressants.

Once a week usually helps me out.

I don't know which comes first. I become manic and than sleep deprived and than more manic...goes on for months...only sleep a couple hours a night...if I take a klonopin so I can sleep the manic cycle stops...so if I want to be manic I skip the klonopin and I stop sleeping and feel manic (euphoria and nuts)...I'm manic right now..haven't slept for days and just want to keep writing...feel really good..don't want to sleep because this will end..
How long can I go like this..get into fights and feel really aggressive...you know like i'm invinceable..feel so good...don't need sleep...I rest a couple hours a night

Hi Michelle.

Are you saying that clonazepam completely blocks the mania?

Have you ever tried melatonin? There are some case reports of it improving mania, and the anticonvulsant effect of medications.
