Mirapex (pramipexole) for depression

Posted by sukarno on October 27, 2010, at 19:19:36

I am curious what people's experiences have been with Mirapex (pramipexole) for depression. I have some 0.25mg tablets collecting dust here. I currently only take alprazolam 1mg QID and use light therapy for depression but if Mirapex/Sifrol is safe and effective, then I'd like to try it.

How about taking benzodiazepines, including alprazolam, with pramipexole?

What dose did you start out with?

Did it work long-term or poop out?

Were the side effects, if any, intolerable?

Some pdocs will use this for depression, especially bipolar type. The last couple docs Ive had discussed it because I did good on wellbutrin, but decided it was to risky.
Theres been some reports about sudden extreme fatigue and addictive behaviors. You are tinkering with dopamine pretty directly, I guess its expected.
If you want to tweak dopamine, Id think stims and wellbutrin are safer to try.
You can also try taking some dopamine precursors.. phenylalanine, tyrosine and l-dopa.
personally I dont get much direct relief from depression with dopamine, its more about raising energy levels and motivation. But thats inter-related with anhedonia in depression I think

Dopamine agonists can sometimes cause anger problems with prolonged treatment.
