Anyone who has taken NARDIL opinion needed

Posted by angels78 on October 13, 2010, at 1:23:43

Hi everyone, this question is to anyone whose taken Nardil and also drank coffee or taken caffeine during the time you were taking the medicine.

Whenever I drink caffeinated coffee about 30 minutes later I start panicing and my SP starts acting up, even when i'm on my regular dose of Nardil 90 mg/day. It's like the coffee is going agaisnt the theurpatic effect of the drug.

I've read on this board that some actually prefer to drink coffee with Nardil to get rid of the tiredness (i do know the maoi diet premits large amounts of caffeine), and i dont drink large amounts just usually a cup or two, but whenever I drink coffee with caffeine or a frapachino it has a Negative effect on me, like all my panic attacks and my social phobia start to creep back in, can this be possible? has anyone ever experienced a negative effect of caffeine on Nardil? Any thoughts would help. thanks

It would seem possible because it is happening to you. Idiosyncratic "paradoxical" reactions are not an uncommon phenomenon when treating depression. Stimulants can put some people to sleep. Seroquel can wake some people up (usually at higher dosages)

Patient: Doctor, it hurts whenever I do this.
Doctor: Well, then, stop doing that.

My advice is to discontinue your intake of coffee and watch what happens. If you are unconvinced, you might elect to rechallenge your CNS with coffee to see if dysphoria recurs. It could be caffeine that is the culprit. However, coffee contains other substances that might contribute to your reaction.

Along the lines of what Scott said in his post, I would say that it sounds like it's possible since it seems to be happening to you. I actually had something similar happen to me when I was taking lithium: I experienced a lot of agitation when I'd consume caffeine despite the fact that much larger amounts of caffeine never made me feel agitated before I started taking lithium. Unfortunately, the agitation and new-found sensitivity to caffeine never went away after I discontinued the lithium.

> has anyone ever experienced a negative effect of caffeine on Nardil?

Personally, no. If anything, I actually seemed to be a little bit less sensitive to the agitation that caffeine can bring on when Nardil was working well for me. Then again, Nardil didn't always work well for me, and there were a few times when I felt a little bit more agitated than usual on Nardil. I can imagine that if I would have started consuming caffeine at those times when I was feeling more agitated than usual on Nardil that the caffeine would have just made the agitation worse.

I have had no negative effect from drinking caffeinated beverages (coffee/tea/soda) along with Nardil. Consider me lucky, perhaps? I take 60mg of Nardil. I, too, don't drink much. Perhaps if I had three cups I might have some bad effects!

Hi,
I actually drink about 5-6 cups of strong coffee a day with no negative effects from Nardil. In fact, I think it helps with the morning dysthymia that is left as a residual from Nardil.

Now, when I took Parnate it was a different story. Parnate was so stimulating to me that coffee on top of it was very uncomfortable.

It has been said many times, we are all so different.

Be Well,
Jedi

Thanks for the response

Can Nardil be not as effective at a higher dose, than a lower dose?

It's been 2 weeks since I moved up to 90mg from 75mg and I feel alright, just not as talkative and don't have the boost of energy I got from 75mg. Can this be possible, should I continue to wait it out another month?

I know one thing for sure- caffeine ruined my positive response to Nardil, and the withdrawal effects from stopping caffeine were worsened whilst on Nardil. Nardil was best at the start- when I used no caffeine at all. I didn't need anything else. Nardil was everything I needed, even my get-up-and-go.
