Explosive disorder meds?

Posted by SheilaC on September 16, 2010, at 18:19:12

I have an issue with intermittent explosive disorder. This has happened my whole life as a result of stressful situations.

I am wondering now if the adderall is contributing to that? Or the lack of enough mood stabilizer? (only on 40mg of Geodon), or if adding back something with serotonin (like Pristiq - I used to take) is helpful for this?

Anyone have any insight/experience on IED?

Thanks!

Intermittent explosive disorder???

Has anyone been diagnosed with this and what meds do you take for this disorder?

I have been "labeled" BP and even BPII, but really, I have experienced period rage incidents where I pretty much just lose it.

I know a lot of people are diagnosed BP with this sort of thing.

Right now I take 40mg of Geodon and it helps the irritability, but I still have some anxiety. I think (and wonder) if anxiety is the unerring cause of these explosive rages?

I remember when I took Pristiq it seemed to make me a nicer person (less irritable with my husband).

I am wondering if anyone has any information about this issue.

Thanks!

I've seen Depakote (valproic acid) work in the elderly, but no personal experience. Problem is, this is hard on the liver - need to monitor liver function and valproic acid levels. A friend's son did well on Zyprexa.

I think it is part of being BP. I know that Tegretol is suppose to help with rage, but you have already been on that. I think therapy might help you the most. I know it seems like the rage comes out of nowhere ... but it doesn't. A therapist could help identify what it is and you could work on it that way. Sometimes more pills are not the answer.

I will say zyprexa always helped me with anger issues. When I went off the zyprexa to try geodon, I found myself just getting angry everywhere. Like on the phone with the pharmacist. This is when I started drinking more and smoking pot again. I never went back to normal till I was on the zyprexa again. Drinking and pot did help it. Just not as well as when on the zyprexa.

Are you able to go back on Zyprexa? or too many se's? Pot can mellow anger, but alcohol can fuel it and can interfere with a lot of psych meds, so please be careful with this:)

I think Maxime has a very good point; more pills can often cause more problems instead of making things better. If therapy and alternative approaches, such as self-help and the use of nutrition and supplements, are options, then I'd personally suggest you try those before you tinker with your meds.

Amphetamines can make people angry. Even at commonly prescribed doses, stimulants can set off mania, psychosis, and rage reactions. I would think the adderall could be contributing to your issues, but...I'm not you. If you're looking to clean up your med cocktail, though, slowly tapering off daily use of your stimulant medication might help you see if its having a positive or negative impact on your stability. Just a suggestion.

Good luck.

Good suggestions, all.
Also I might point out that self medication doesn't always work out. When I used to drink (and I drank a lot), I was NOT nice and would become explosively angry. You could pretty much rely on that happening.

Lots to consider.

Alcohol can definately intensify negative emotions. Certain medications can make anger issues worse too.

Sometimes, paradoxically, the anticonvulsants can make anger, irritability worse.

Zyprexa is great stuff, except for the weight gain aspect.

That sucks...my antidepressant causes sweating - it's embarrassing. I know neurontin can cause weight gain, too, but can be helpful for mood stabilization. It would be nice if they could develop a medication without adverse effects, but I'm dreaming! I hope you've gotten other ideas to try. Good luck!

I heard that diapers can help with this kind of issue. ;-)

Seriously I don't know, but I hope you get better.

These kinds of terms are just ways for docs to say, "we don't have a clue what is wrong with this patient and we have not a clue how to investigate it, but we don't want to appear impotent so let's give it a technical name."

I don't know, I just don't find labels reliable or useful. You already knew you had episodes of rage, so someone charges you $200 to rephrase it as "intermittent explosive disorder". Geez.

There is so much overlap between the different supposed psychiatric disorders, so much subjective interpretation that will vary from doc to doc, and weak reliability in choosing meds based on the given label, so I just don't find them useful.

I find it more useful to instead do two things:
1. Try herbs and/or meds and/or supplements that are known to have an impact on the symptom.
2. Begin the hunt to rule things in or out as causes of whatever is impacting the brain.

You know what helped me a lot with rage was lexapro. Whether this was due to the serotonin boost or the mild dopamine damping Im not sure.
Celexa at an equivalent dose wasnt as good in this respect.
That explosive rage reminds me of PTSD, which has cyclothymia as a component. Ever consider a second opinion? It may or may not affect your treatment. For me its been a mixed bag but I have more options now than I did before.
