This has been on my mind for years. Does anyone think any type of mental illness could be autoimmune or the result of another autoimmune illness. As for a while quite a few posters were suffering from autoimmune issues. And I've always seen a connection to thyroid. And if you google side effects of thyroid are anxiety/depression. Does one lead to the other. Maybe someone else can word this better and please feel free to. It just seems like there is a missing link somewhere. Don't have to agree. Like why do so many also become anxious and depressed at midlife? And also anyone feel as the body ages the mind ages and any slight mental illness gets worse. My pdoc said we all have coping mechanisms and only so many and when you reach you max you have the old term nervous breakdown? Just trying to figure things out. Phillipa

Yes, absolutely. SOME linked to disfunctions yet to be identified. Don't know if that would make treatment markedly different or not for some cases, as no cure yet for autoimmune.
And then, a thought: a autoimmune response to my own thoughts? Super-ego gone wild and constantly attacking self?
(Yes, I was allergic to my childhood :) but that's inflammatory illness, not
autoimmune.):) off the cuff

True about the treatment as even with lymes the doc said treat the damage done. So you attacked your brain? Guess I also did. Love Phillipa

I think it is totally possible. For instance even though I am treated aggressively for my thyroid I am tired all the time and I gain weight easily. Maybe my thyroid problems cause a lot of the depression. Even though we take throid meds, it doesn't mean that the body is using it the right way. All the endo can tell you is how is in your blood.

Yes that's true. From what I've read why so many switch to armour thyroid they just feel better. Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,
I have wondered this myself. I have crohn's disease, so I sometimes wonder if that's related to my ADD/depresh
Seems like my ADD gets worse as I get older - I wonder is my mind deteriorating or am I getting f---ed up from all the meds I've tried.

Friday getting an MRI of the brain as no taste and smell for seven years. Saw ENT today and he ordered it as had a microadenoma once before. I may as well have a feeding tube. Sjournes is one that causes what I have. And anxiety/depression accompany thyroid and a good many of other autoimmune diseases so why not just the brain, also IBS it's also one. Phillipa

Phillipa, maybe an answer for you? I hope, though, that you're alright. Sounds like you've found a doctor to take your symptoms seriously?
Losing taste and smell is difficult for me to imagine. Must be very distressing. Any treatment possibilities discussed?

I felt significantly better after my doctor ran Ige and Iga tests and tested my absorption and everything was ok and my vitamin levels were good.
I also felt less concerned about fatigue when I was in Denmark and had to ride a bike. At first it made me dizzy and my vision funny, but now I am used to it and don't have the problem anymore. When ever I have physical fatigue it is often related to will power I think. Like I just don't care enough to push lifting weights when it gets to be really hard.
